In verklarende woordenboeken wordt voor elk woord een betekenis gegeven. Dat wekt de indruk dat iedereen exact dezelfde betekenis toekent aan die woorden. Veel van de woorden die we dagelijks gebruiken, zijn echter vage begrippen waarbij er onzekerheid heerst of het begrip al dan niet geschikt is om een bepaalde entiteit te representeren (Verheyen & Storms, 2013). Is bijv. een man van 1.80 meter 'GROOT'? 'GROOT' en 'ZWAAR' zijn allebei gradueel vage begrippen die op een continuüm met kwantitatieve aanduidingen geplaatst kunnen worden. Volgens de threshold theory van Hampton (1995, 2007) bestaan er inter-indiviuele betekenisverschillen omdat mensen een persoonlijke drempel plaatsen op het continuüm. Die drempel bepaalt hoeveel van dit criterium vereist is om een bepaald item te onderschrijven als een categorielid. In deze masterproef willen we nagaan of ons eigen lichaam ook een bron van betekenisverschillen vormt. Wetenschappelijke en anekdotische evidentie tonen immers aan dat mensen het (eigen) lichaam en het ego vaak gebruiken als referentiepunt en als inschattingsmethode voor lengteaanduidingen (Tribushinina, 2008; Whitelaw, 2007) en dat begrippen belichaamd (kunnen) worden (embodiment) (Glenberg, 1997). In dit onderzoek willen we nagaan of er sprake is van egocentrische representatie bij vage begrippen. Dit werd onderzocht door twee studies uit te voeren waarin gevraagd werd mannelijke en vrouwelijke figuren te beoordelen als 'GROOT' of 'ZWAAR'. In studie één ('GROOT') wordt er zowel een visuele voorstelling als kwantitatieve lengte-informatie beschikbaar gesteld en wordt het Rasch model toegepast om na te gaan of er een verband is tussen de drempelwaarde en de eigen lichaamslengte. In de tweede studie ('ZWAAR') wordt er gebruikt gemaakt van de lijntekeningen uit de BIAS-BD (Gardner R.M., Jappe, & Gardner, L., 2009). The concept teachers' community (TC) applies to a range of activities teachers undertake in collaboration, mainly for professional development purposes. Although much theoretical literature and empirical studies were devoted to the subject, many aspects are yet to be examined and clarified, including types of these communities, their formation, and the interests of their initiators. This review begins with theoretical background of teachers' communities (TCs) in order to understand the concepts and context in which these communities act. Following, the different aspects of the phenomenon are examined: the formations and types of communities; essential elements for their favorable outcomes; the roles the initiators of such communities play and their influence on the operation of the communities. In order to provide this information a broad search on TCs was performed. Inclusion criteria were applied through a multistage process, at the end of which 30 empirical studies on TCs from across the world were selected and analyzed using a narrative synthesis method. The results indicate that TCs vary in form and function and these materially influence the work and accomplishments of the communities. Moreover, the capacities of the facilitator and the school principal, the group composition and elements of trust and respect among the members are critical to the successful outcomes of the work of the communities. Moreover, it was found that the stakeholders of these communities have a significant influence on their formation and sustainability.
