This book is a comprehensive survey of the tendencies in the history of Indian art. It aims primarily to explain what different artistic forms meant to their makers, and to give some idea of the realities of Indian life which affected Indian aesthetics. After referring to the earliest civilizations of India, that of the Indus Valley, and interpreting some of its enigmatic art, the book continues with a survey of early secular art and its influence on Buddhist expression. In dealing with Hindu art and architecture it points up especially the dynastic significance of the major monuments. It explains the special character of Indo-Muslim art, and the way it introduced new themes and interests. In then relates the achievements of the Rajput miniature painters to their complex artistic heritage. The illustrations have been chosen mainly because they illustrate unfamiliar examples from the vast range of Indian art, because they show familiar pieces in an unfamiliar way or because they convey the special atmosphere of the Indian environment before Western life had much affected it. -- From publisher's description.
