Hoewel bashôfu aanzienlijke aandacht krijgt wegens haar huidige status als “cultureel erfgoed van Japan”, bleven haar herkomst en geschiedenis tot hiertoe in het vage. Deze studie heeft tot doel om de herkomst van bashôfu in de Ryukyu Archipel, inbegrepen de herkomst van de onbewerkte grondstof, methodes om draad ervan te maken en haar weeftechnieken, op te helderen. Deze studie stelt ook de vraag naar het waarom van deze technologie en hoe het Okinawaanse volk die heeft ontwikkeld en in haar gemeenschap heeft ingepast. Aangezien bashôfu tot nu toe niet op een uitvoerige manier bestudeerd werd, beschouwt deze studie het vanuit verscheiden standpunten die voortspruiten uit diverse studiegebieden, zoals pure geschiedenis, fytohistorie (plantengeschiedenis), etnografie, folklore en filologie. Bibliotheekonderzoek werd verricht voor de analyse van zowel Ryukyuaanse en Japanse primaire bronnen met betrekking tot bashôfu , bestaande uit geschreven bronnen, tekeningen, schilderijen en foto’s, als Chinese and Westerse bronnen. Deze studie behandelt ook materiële voorbeelden van stoffen en kledingstukken, die werden waargenomen tijdens veldwerk, evenals bevindingen opgedaan door technische ervaringen en participerende observatie. De verhandeling bestaat uit vier delen. Deel Een geeft een overzicht van historische gebeurtenissen in Ryukyu, waarin Ryukyu’s dualistische positie en relatie met China en Japan uitvoerig beschreven worden. Dit is noodzakelijk omdat Ryukyu/Okinawa’s historische omstandigheden rechtstreeks verband houden met de geschiedenis van bashôfu en op haar betekenis en rol een ingrijpende invloed uitoefenden. Deel Twee bevat een uitgebreide bronnenanalyse met betrekking tot bashôfu en haar productietechnieken in de Ryukyu Archipel, voor een periode gaande van ongeveer de 12e tot beging 20ste eeuw. Deze analyse brengt de verscheiden gebruiken van bashôfu en haar productieproces, zoals dat beoefend werd in het verleden, aan het licht. Het geeft ook een algemeen beeld van de acculturatie van de weefkunst van bashôfu in de Ryukyu Archipel. Om verwarring te vermijden, worden, alvorens de bronnenanalyse aan te vatten, de belangrijkste textielvezels die gebruikt werden in de geschiedenis van de Ryukyuaanse weefkunst, met name ramie, ito bashô, zijde en katoen, in detail besproken. In Deel Drie worden doorheen de vergelijking van de weeftechnologie van Ryukyuaanse bananenvezel met die van Musa-vezels in Zuidoost-Azië en Zuid-China, eventuele verwantschappen onderzocht en de plausibiliteit van algemeen aanvaarde theorieën over de herkomst van bashôfu in de Ryukyu Archipel nagegaan. Bijzonder relevant voor deze studie waren de Chinese bronnen, die het belang van Ryukyu’s relatie met Zuid-China in de geschiedenis van bashôfu aanduidden. Deze analyse wijst uit dat zowel de grondstof (Musa balbisiana) als de weeftechnologie van bashôfu in de Ryukyu Archipel geïntroduceerd zijn vanuit Zuid-China, niet vanuit Zuidoost-Azië zoals algemeen beweerd wordt. Deel Vier behandelt de tegenwoordige staat van bashôfu, met inbegrip van haar huidige socio-culturele rol in de Ryukyu Archipel en de rest van Japan, doorheen een gedetailleerde beschrijving van materiële voorbeelden waarin bijzondere aandacht besteed wordt aan de veranderende waarde en functie van bashôfu. In Deel Vier wordt ook het gehele huidige productieproces van bashôfu in detail beschreven, gebaseerd op veldnotities en technische ervaring. Om te antwoorden op de vraag waarom ito bashô meer in trek kwam bij het Okinawaanse volk dan ramie onderscheidt Deel Vier andere gebruiken van deze plant dan die als textielmateriaal, en vergelijkt haar nut met die van ramie. While bashôfu receives considerable attention because of its present value as one of Japan’s cultural properties, its origins and history have remained hidden in the background. This study aims to clarify the origins of bashôfu in the Ryukyu Archipelago, including the origins of the raw material, yarn-making methods and weaving techniques. It also focuses on why and how the Okinawan people have adopted these techniques and fit them into their own society. Since bashôfu previously had not been studied in a comprehensive way, this study considers it from several viewpoints that spring from various fields, such as pure history, phytohistory, ethnography, folklore and philology. Library research was undertaken to analyse Ryukyuan and Japanese primary sources related to bashôfu , including written sources, drawings, paintings and photographs, as well as Chinese and Western sources. This study also discusses material examples of cloth and garments observed during fieldwork, and findings obtained through technical experience and participant observation. The dissertation consists of four parts. Part One is an overview of historical events that occurred in Ryukyu, through which its dual position and relationship with both China and mainland Japan are amply described. This discussion is necessary since Ryukyu’s/Okinawa’s changing historical circumstances were directly related to the history of bash ôfu and exerted far-reaching influences on bashôfu’s significance and role . Part Two provides a comprehensive review of sources related to Ryukyuan banana-fibre cloth and its production techniques, covering the period from approximately the 12th to the early 20th centuries. This analysis of sources reveals bashôfu’s various uses as well as its production processes as practiced in the past. It also gives an overall picture of the acculturation of banana-fibre weaving in the Ryukyu Archipelago. Before starting this review of sources, the major textile fibres used throughout Ryukyu’s/Okinawa’s weaving history, i.e. ramie, ito bashô , silk and cotton, are discussed in detail, in order to avoid possible confusion between them. In Part Three , through comparisons of the weaving technologies of Ryukyuan banana-fibre and Musa -fibre in Southeast Asia and Southern China, it was possible to examine their relationships and judge the plausibility of commonly accepted theories regarding the origins of Ryukyuan banana-fibre weaving. The Chinese sources were particularly relevant to this study, showing the importance of Ryukyu’s relationship with Southern China in the history of bashôfu. This analysis reveals that the raw material (Musa balbisiana) as well as banana-fibre weaving were introduced in the Ryukyu Archipelago from Southern China, not from Southeast Asia as commonly argued. Part Four discusses the current status of bashôfu, including its present socio-cultural role in the Ryukyu Archipelago and mainland Japan, by offering a detailed description of material examples of bashôfu with particular attention to the changing value and function of bashôfu. In Part Four, the whole production process is described in detail, based on field notes and technical experience. To answer the question as to why ito bashô eventually became more popular than ramie, Part Four identifies several uses of this plant other than as textile material, and compares its usefulness with that of ramie.
