Dit boek verschijnt naar aanleiding van een studiedag over internationale journalistiek op 1 juli 2013, die georganiseerd wordt aan het Brussels Center for Journalism Studies aan de Hogeschool-Universiteit Brussel. Doorheen de vele themas die in dit onderzoekscentrum behandeld worden, is de aandacht voor internationale journalistiek een belangrijke rode draad. Deze rode draad heeft in niet geringe mate te maken met het feit dat vele mensen in het onderzoekscentrum samen hebben gewerkt met Jan Servaes, en geïnspireerd zijn door zijn werk. Naar aanleiding van zijn emeritaat in Brussel hebben alle mensen die in de context van de HUB, of in de context van de Katholieke Universiteit Brussel, één van de partners in de HUB, met Jan Servaes samenwerkten een hoofdstuk geschreven voor dit boek. In 2009 riep The Guardian-journalist Nick Davies op tot een wedergeboorte van het eerzame vak van journalist. De meeste journalisten zijn fatsoenlijke mensen, maar een paar bad guys hebben onze reputatie verknald', verklaarde hij aan de Volkskrant. Belangenverstrengeling die de berichtgeving over de openbare omroep beïnvloedt, de vele misvattingen over de teloorgang van de gedrukte media, faits divers en pulp die het nieuws overwoekeren, de censuur van elke 'onbetamelijke mening': het is slechts een kleine greep uit wat er allemaal misgaat in de wereld van de media. Over deze en nog vele andere misstanden gaat De vierde onmacht, een verzamelwerk waarin 22 spraakmakende en gezaghebbende auteurs de toestand van onze media en de journalistiek in Vlaanderen scherp op de korrel nemen. Journalisten, politici, academici en mediawatchers laten de lezer binnen in de achterkamers van de media, de plekken waar personaliteiten worden gemaakt en gekraakt, waar nepnieuws wordt geproduceerd en informatie geruisloos verdwijnt of verpulvert tot desinformatie. Dit boek is een vervolg op Media & journalistiek in Vlaanderen. Kritisch doorgelicht. Een actuele verkenningstocht die een nieuwe reeks onthullende feiten en verhelderende inzichten aan het licht brengt. Ook de mediakritiek zelf wordt in deze bundel kritisch aangepakt. De vierde onmacht toont niet alleen dat de media machtig zijn, maar ook dat ze dagelijks geconfronteerd worden met hun onmacht als sterke, onafhankelijke vierde macht op te treden.
