Abstract

The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) examines not just what students know in science, reading and mathematics, but what they can do with what they know. Results from PISA show educators and policy makers the quality and equity of learning outcomes achieved elsewhere, and allow them to learn from the policies and practices applied in other countries. PISA 2015 Results (Volume III): Students' Well-Being, is one of five volumes that present the results of the PISA 2015 survey, the sixth round of the triennial assessment. It explores a comprehensive set of well-being indicators for adolescents that covers both negative outcomes (e.g. anxiety, low performance) and the positive impulses that promote healthy development (e.g. interest, engagement, motivation to achieve). Children spend a considerable amount of time in the classroom: following lessons, socialising with classmates, and interacting with teachers and other staff members. What happens in school - as well as at home - is therefore key to understanding whether students enjoy good physical and mental health, how happy and satisfied they are with different aspects of their life, how connected to others they feel, and the aspirations they have for their future.

Abstract

"This book has been written for the rank and file of teachers, school supervisors, and normal-school students. Its purpose is to illustrate the large individual differences in original endowment which exist among school children and to show the practical bearing of these differences upon the everyday problems of classroom management and school administration. It does not treat, except incidentally, the psychological principles underlying intelligence tests. Some of these problems the writer has touched upon elsewhere. The technique of giving the tests of the revised Binet scale and the general significance of mental tests for education have been set forth in some detail in another volume of this series, The Measurement of Intelligence, which should be read in connection with the present volume. The writer's present aim is the more practical one of showing how the results of mental tests may be put to everyday use in the grade classification and in the educational guidance of school children"--Preface. Abstract

"The reliability and validity of information obtained from any psychological test is dependent on the scope and psychometric attributes of the instrument used. As in all areas of science, what psychologists discover depends on the quality of the instruments used and the information they provide as well as skillful interpretation of the test results. Better conceptualized instruments yield more accurate and informative data than do weaker instruments. Instruments that uncover more useful information about the individual being examined are more valid and ultimately better inform both researchers and clinicians. The tools school psychologists choose for diagnostic decision making substantially influence the reliability and validity of the information they obtain and the decisions they make. Simply put, the better the tool is, the more valid and reliable the decisions; the more useful the information obtained is, the better the services provided. In this chapter, some important issues regarding quality and effectiveness of the tools used in school psychology are discussed"--Book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2013 APA, all rights reserved).
