Selon les pragmatistes Peirce, James et Dewey, le concept d'expérience dont nous avons hérité est un des plus décevants de l'histoire de la philosophie, réduit le plus souvent au sujet, à la conscience ou à la perception visuelle. Même l'empirisme classique, qui se présentait pourtant comme une philosophie de l'expérience, n'a pu lui donner les dimensions qu'il requérait. Les pragmatistes lui opposent un concept d'expérience étendu à toutes les formes de réalités, biologiques, psychologiques et sociales, décentrant la perspective uniquement "anthropologique" qui lui semblait intimement liée. L'expérience y devient l'effet des formes innombrables que peuvent prendre les interactions entre un vivant et son milieu. L'univers y est décrit comme une multiplicité de centres d'expérience qui communiquent les uns avec les autres et produisent, par leurs actions réciproques, un "monde commun". Dès lors, une nouvelle fonction est attribuée à la philosophie, inspirée par la physiologie, l'histoire naturelle et l'éthologie : enquêter sur la pluralité des modes d'expérience.
