Abstract

For the last century, Americans have been cajoled, instructed, scolded, and just plain entertained by billboards. From the multitudes of posters plastered on every available surface at the turn of the century to today's enormous high-tech wonders standing tall on their own structures, all billboards share a fascinating and revealing heritage. In fact, as author James Fraser describes, in many ways the history of the billboard mirrors the history of American graphic design. Fraser details how everything from athletic shoes to zoos has been promoted on billboards. Always placing the boards in their social and historical context, he carefully delineates how billboard styles evolved, sometimes flying in the face of contemporary art and design trends ; how the image has grown and the copy has shrunk, almost to extinction ; and how modern structures and technical improvements in billboard manufacturing and hanging have changed the face of the industry. Fraser names names - from James Montgomery Flagg and Howard Chandler Christy to Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast - as he discusses the role of the designer and the rise of advertising's art director and creative department, focusing on how billboards have fit into the advertising world at large. In addition, he analyzes the development and history of the billboard industry, now more than century old. Throughout the book, we encounter some familiar images - wartime recruitment posters ; early automobile, tobacco, and gasoline ads ; the Volkswagen campaign of the sixties ; the influential Nike boards of just a few years ago - but one of the strongest features of "The American Billboards" is its abundance of little-known ads. In a fascinating epilogue, we learn of some aspects of the billboard of the future - imagine, if you will, a network of huge television screens across the country upon which designers will be able to create sales messages with a few strokes of an electornic brush. Documented in 166 vintage photographs, the history of the American billboard is a fascinating lesson in how this bold, brash medium has evolved and succeeded (in the 1939 words of poster designer A. M. Cassandre) in "putting on one-act plays to a five-second audience".
