With the rise of the global economy and the increasing interconnectedness of all fields, architects find themselves confronted with new tasks and fields of activity - the profession is in flux. Renowned international experts from Europe and the United States discuss this development in twenty-five technical papers: What competences do architects have that can help them to meet the challenges of new tasks? What additional skills and knowledge will they need? What concrete strategies are architects already using today to hold their own in new fields of activity? What can be learned from this? The book begins with a brief introduction by the editor, who frames these problems and issues and embeds the essays within the larger context of contemporary architectural discourse. Short biographies of the authors at the end of the book round off the publication. During the first five years of a new architectural practice, typical problems arise that have to be managed. Based on the reports of young architectural practices, which were gathered in workshops throughout Europe, this manual analyzes commonly observed and frequent issues, and offers approaches to resolving them. What is special: the approaches were developed from daily working experience, and can be realistically implemented, not least because they are aimed at the different phases of a developing practice - "Getting started", "Making mistakes", "Going public", "Choosing a specialization", and "Doing competitions". For the second edition the texts were extended and corrected; statistics and charts were brought up to date. The cool presentation remains as appealing as in the first issue.

In past years, architects have been confronted with a changed market, changed sets of tasks and also new requirements. Which strategies can they adopt to get commissions or spark interest in their projects? With selected examples, the author analyses the processes of individual architects since the 1950s. Beginning with the commencement of marketing in the North American post-war era he proceeds to then cast his view to contemporary times. Transformations in society and politics, the changed requirements of clients, and also the crisis in the economy and financial circles all influence the professional existence of architects. While pure construction itself was the focus in previous times, today's architects must adopt a wide variety of roles in relation to clients - ranging from consultant to mediator and brand designer. The book is intended to inspire architects to consider new options and unusual paths.

How does the architectural design become reality? After a successful presentation come the phase of tenders and that of their realization. Design must now be reformulated into working drawings. That 's exactly what Liebing, a renowned expert for plan views and detailed views, calls the other architecture . Working drawings constitute the basis for the real construction itself. In the firms, mostly young architects are charged with these tasks. But during education, this topic is often addressed insufficiently. The correct transformation of a presentation design into working drawings for a bid

"Directly confronting the nature of contemporary architectural work, this book is the first to address a void at the heart of architectural discourse and thinking. For too long, architects have avoided questioning how the central aspects of architectural "practice" (professionalism, profit, technology, design, craft, and building) combine to characterize the work performed in the architectural office. Nor has there been a deeper evaluation of the unspoken and historically-determined myths that assign cultural, symbolic, and economic value to architectural labor. The Architect as Worker presents a range of essays exploring the issues central to architectural labor. These include questions about the nature of design work; immaterial and creative labor and how it gets categorized, spatialized, and monetized within architecture; the connection between parametrics and BIM and labor; theories of architectural work; architectural design as a cultural and economic condition; entrepreneurialism; and the possibility of ethical and rewarding architectural practice. The book is a call-to-arms, and its ultimate goal is to change the profession. It will strike a chord with architects, who will recognize the struggle of their profession; with students trying to understand the connections between work, value, and creative pleasure; and with academics and cultural theorists seeking to understand what grounds the discipline"--
