"There are three ways in which ideas preeminently manifest themselves as living powers in the practical life of mankind, namely: in Art, in Ethics, and in Religion. To the province of Art belong, generally, those productions of the imagination which are capable of calling forth the sentiment or emotion of the beautiful; to that of Ethics, the striving of the individual will after worth and dignity of character, of communities of men after the right organization of society, and of a state after its true constitution; and to that of Religion, the striving after the restoration of that fellowship with God and harmony with nature which alone can place man in the position he was originally destined to occupy. Art is the subject I propose to treat of in the following pages. The general subject, therefore, is Art; not, however, in the restricted and limited sense in which this word is very commonly understood. Cet ouvrage regroupe plusieurs textes centrés sur les questions cardinales de la philosophie de Merleau-Ponty, de ses premières à ses dernières oeuvres, en particulier : les questions de l'incarnation, de l'expression, de la peinture, de la vision et bien sûr du style. L'analyse est donc plutôt orientée du côté de l'esthétique et des rapports existant entre philosophie et non-philosophie. Merleau-Ponty a donné toute son importance au silence de la peinture pour tenter de comprendre la dimension du langage et de l'expression.

Didactisme, romantisme, classicisme sont les schémas possibles du nœud entre art et philosophie, troisième terme de ce nœud comme éducation des matières, et particulièrement de la jeunesse. Mais ce qui caractérise à mon avis notre fin de siècle, c'est que, tout en ayant connu la saturation de ces trois schémas, il n'en a pas produit de nouveaux. Ce qui tend à produire, aujourd'hui, une sorte d'effroi des termes, une déconnexion désespérée entre art et philosophie, et la chute pure et simple de ce qui circulait entre eux : le thème pédagogique. De là découle la thèse autour de laquelle ce petit livre n'est qu'une série de variations : face à une telle situation de saturation et de clôture, il faut tenter de proposer un nouveau schéma, un quatrième mode de connexion entre philosophie et art.

Ein wichtiges Desiderat der Bildwissenschaft bestand darin, das oszillierende Verhältnis zwischen der Technik der Bilder und der Bilder als Techniken der Kultur in seiner interkulturellen Vielfalt auszuloten. Es handelt sich um die zwei Seiten einer Medaille, die sich wechselseitig bedingen und zwei verschiedene Facetten des Technischen miteinander vereinen: Technik zum einen im ursprünglichen und allgemeinen Sinn als Fähigkeit, List und Kunstfertigkeit, mit bestimmten Mitteln Bildern herzustellen, sie überhaupt zu materialisieren, zu veräußerlichen, für alle sichtbar und dauerhaft für das kulturelle Bildgedächtnis zu machen. Technik soll zum anderen im Sinne von 'Kulturtechnik' als die erworbene Fähigkeit und Eigenschaft der Bilder verstanden werden, sichtbare Imaginationen, Wünsche und Illusionen zu erfinden, Interaktionen mit dem Imaginären und Möglichkeiten der Immersion anzubieten, zugleich Räume des Wissens, der Distanz und Reflexion zu schaffen; ferner Anwesenheit an die Stelle von Abwesenheit, Nähe an die Stelle unüberbrückbarer Ferne zu setzen und Diesseits und Jenseits miteinander zu verbinden. Der Band beleuchtet dieses Wechselverhältnis in vielen historischen, theoretischen, aber vor allem auch interkulturellen Perspektiven. Diese Technik der Bilder, die wiederum Kulturtechniken des Betrachtens und Bildpraxis bedingen und zugleich voraussetzen, scheint insbesondere mit den technischen Leistungen der Neuen Medien explizit geworden, hat aber, wie viele Beiträge zeigen, eine lange Vorgeschichte. Die leitende Frage, die von der Gegenwart aus in einem möglichst großen historischen und interkulturellen Spektrum gestellt wird, ist, inwieweit die kulturell besonderen und graduell sehr verschiedenen Techniken der Bilder sich zumindest in Fallbeispielen zu bestimmten Bildtechniken synthetisieren lassen.

The volume addresses a distinct field in the anthropology of culture, namely that of creativity. It defines the cultural field of poiesis, which includes not only the poetic creation, but also the scientific and philosophical one, and, above all, insists on the connection of creativity with the metaphysical spirituality, the mythological imaginary, and the sacred realm. Creation is primarily personal--this phenomenon is obvious both in the field of art and of theory. This book considers that it is necessary to emphasize, from the perspective of cultural anthropology, the importance and significance of the creative act that binds all fields of culture. To this end, it gives new meanings to the relationship between the symbolic and abstract in the field of cultural creation, a relationship considered from the perspective of three concepts--beauty, harmony and dynamic asymmetry--as well as the relationship between creative intuition and constructive reason. The book adopts a historical-comparative approach, from the perspective of the dialectic of the creative act, the becoming and synthesis of some opposite elements, coordinated by the abstract-creative principle: dynamis and symetros, rational and symbolic, immanent and transcendent. It shows that the meaning of experience as a creative synthesis is primordial and fundamental to human existence. The book is addressed both to specialists in the field of philosophy of art or cultural anthropology, and to the general reader who wants to approach the original meaning of spiritual creation, poiesis, which is the unification of all possible experiences, both feelings and knowledge.
