In 1790, between the birth of America (1776) and the creation of the French National Assembly (1789), nine provinces nestled between the French and Dutch borders declared themselves a new free and independent country: the United States of Belgium. Before then, the provinces had been part of the vast Austrian Habsburg Empire ruled by Joseph II. In 1789 revolutionaries from Brussels to Ghent to Namur recruited a grass-roots army that, to the surprise of many, successfully chased imperial forces from the majority of the territories. The exhilaration of military triumph and political independence quickly faded as revolutionary factions fought each other and the European monarchies became more nervous in the face of French radicalization. Yet, the course of events had fostered the solidification of a new identity among the provinces’ inhabitants: Belgianness. This is the story of the emergence of Belgianness in the crucible of revolution.The United States of Belgium tells the story of the First Belgian Revolution before the creation of a language barrier between French and Dutch. It incorporates over 50 contemporary images of the revolutionary era.

Une des caractéristiques du XXIe siècle serait la « judiciarisation » des systèmes politiques et sociaux qui renvoie à l'extension du pouvoir des juges, lesquels sont amenés à traiter un nombre croissant de problèmes politiques et sociaux. Si elle était confirmée, la « judiciarisation » serait-elle susceptible de remettre en cause les fondements classiques de notre approche occidentale de la démocratie et de l'exercice du pouvoir politique ?Prenant la forme d'un essai pédagogique afin de répondre à cette question, l'ouvrage procède en trois grandes étapes. Premièrement, le pouvoir politique et l'audace des juges sont définis à partir de la foisonnante littérature en science politique. Deuxièmement, les trois grandes fonctions politiques des juges sont discutées (production de normes, arbitrage de valeurs morales et pérennité du système politique). Troisièmement, la légitimité des juges est interrogée à l'aune de différents critères d'acceptabilité sociale. Le propos de l'auteur est illustré par de très nombreuses décisions de juridictions suprêmes (Cours de cassation, Conseils d'État, Cours constitutionnelles) et européennes.

Het internet heeft een gigantische nieuwe ruimte geschapen waarin we constant spelen met normen, regeltjes en dingen die 'normaal' zijn. Maar we geven nog steeds gestalte aan onszelf aan de hand van oude formats. We leven op het snijpunt van de 'echte' en de 'virtuele' wereld. Frames, format en selfies is een prikkelend essay over schoonheidsidealen die viraal gaan in grote delen van de wereld, over de manier waarop we onszelf presenteren op sociale media en over big data. Maar ook over de vraag waarom de online en offline handelingen van een massamoordenaar op een abstract niveau nauwelijks verschillen van opzoeken op YouTube hoe we best een kip op de barbecue braden.
