All designers will tell you that the design process is one of perserverance, failure, hard work and eventual triumph. Book cover design is no different. The idea for the book stemmed from attending a talk at St. Bride's Foundation, watching Jon Gray and Jamie Keenan present a carousel of beautiful covers that have never seen the cover of a book as they were rejected (for various reasons) along the way. This book is published on the occasion of an exhibition of work by Dutch designer Karel Martens at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague. Besides offering a closer look at his free work, it also covers his approach to the teaching of graphic design. Comprising a selection of both past work and more recent applied work, it also includes new essays by David Bennewith, who examines Martens' approach to teaching through its history and accounts from students, and Robin Kinross, who offers a meditation on the artist's free work, which demonstrates a consistent line of inquiry through his 54 years in graphic design. Martens was the recipient of the Gerrit Noordzij Prize in 2012. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, The Netherlands (03.2015).

Bij de meeste kunstliefhebbers zijn ze vrijwel onbekend: de illustraties van Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) in uitgaven van het werk van Belgische schrijvers als Emile Verhaeren, Maurice Maeterlinck, Franz Hellens, Paul Neuhuys en vele anderen. Spilliaert illustreerde hun dichtbundels en theaterstukken, en zelfs een kinderboek, met tekeningen in Oost-Indische inkt en aquarelverf, of liet zijn inspiratie de vrije loop bij het visualiseren van de droomwereld van de auteurs.
