Ce livre articule deux analyses, celle des romans de V. Y. Mudimbe, Patrick Chamoiseau et Abdélkébir Khatibi et celle des modalités par lesquels l’essai brise constamment la linéarité des récits et propose un autre regard ironique sur le monde. L’intrusion du métatexte (l’essai) se veut une machine à réinventer l’univers, et porte paradoxalement l’aveu de son inscription dans une pratique sociale. Mudimbe recourt à la traversée des sciences humaines et sociales, Chamoiseau convoque les célébrités de la littérature mondiale, et Khatibi décrypte le Coran. Les trois écrivains veulent réformer la société, contribuer à sa connaissance et atteindre une vérité poétique, fuyante, multiple. Mudimbe en appelle avec une implacable ironie à une réflexion sur l’irréductibilité de l’altérité humaine. Chamoiseau, réécrivant la mémoire de l’esclavage, pointe du doigt les pièges de l’institution littéraire parisienne et réaffirme la diversité de l’identité antillaise. Khatibi affirme l’écartèlement entre des valeurs et des langues antithétiques, qui le constituent profondément. Par cette identification du métatexte, ce livre recaractérise le pacte de lecture attaché aux romans de ces trois écrivains, et partant, au roman même.
