Watchmen has been hailed as the quintessential graphic novel and has spawned a body of literary criticism since its 1986 initial appearance in installments. This work explores the graphic novel's reception in both popular and scholarly arenas and how the conceptual relationship between images and words affects the reading experience. Other topics include heroism as a stereotype, the hero's journey, the role of the narrator, and the way in which the graphic layout manipulates the reader's perception of time and space.

Dès son premier long métrage, À bout de souffle (1960), Jean-Luc Godard se montre attentif à la bande dessinée, au roman-photo et à la publicité. Il s'empare de ces images populaires pour construire certaines séquences cinématographiques, y fait des allusions ou les cite dans ses films, mais surtout - de façon plus originale et plus méconnue - s'en empare hors écran. C'est ainsi qu'entre 1960 et 1968, les films de Godard s'accompagnent d'un important appareil promotionnel inspiré par les bandes dessinées et les romans-photos qui paraissent aussi bien dans la presse spécialisée que dans les quotidiens ou les publications destinées à la jeunesse. Alors que le récit en images déferle en France, le cinéaste surfe sur cette autre vague nouvelle pour annoncer la sienne. Au-delà de leur aspect promotionnel, les ciné-romans et les bandes dessinées conçus pour À bout de souffle, Une femme est une femme ou Alphaville participent à la fabrication du film chez Godard, en ce qu'ils fonctionnent comme des prolongement du cinéma hors la salle : une extension de l'action de l'artiste à l'ensemble de l'espace médiatique. En somme, le moyen pour Godard d'exercer son art en «contrebandes», de le déplacer vers un contrechamp populaire. Jusqu'à présent inexplorées, les raisons pour lesquelles Godard s'empare du roman-photo et de la bande dessinée sont multiples : contourner la censure politique ou l'interdiction de ses films aux moins de dix-huit ans, inventer une forme de promotion moderne pour des films nouveaux, concilier cinéma d'auteur et culture populaire, penser un nouveau rapport entre image et texte, prolonger l'acte cinématographique, s'approprier et détourner les mass-media ainsi que le fera à sa suite l'Internationale situationniste. Contrebandes Godard reproduit de nombreux documents restés inédits depuis les années 1960, et fait la part belle à plusieurs œuvres dans leur intégralité : les maquettes originales du feuilleton que Raymond Cauchetier - le plus célèbre photographe de plateau de la Nouvelle Vague, qui fut également l'un des plus talentueux réalisateurs de roman-photo - réalisa à partir d'À bout de souffle pour Le Parisien libéré; le ciné-roman voulu par Godard pour accompagner la sortie d'Une femme est une femme; la bande dessinée conçue pour la promotion d'Alphaville, parues dans Figaropravda, un faux journal promotionnel imaginé par Godard pour la sortie du film; Journal d'une femme mariée, l'adaptation graphique du film éponyme que Macha Méril et Godard cosignèrent en 1965; une présentation du Petit Soldat dans les colonnes des Cahiers du cinéma, etc. Ces documents sont introduits par les historiens de l'art Pierre Pinchon et Marie-Charlotte Calafat, et par un témoignage exclusif de Macha Méril. Coédité avec le MuCEM dans le cadre de l'exposition «Roman-photo» (13 décembre 2017 - 23 avril 2018), cet ouvrage a reçu le soutien du Centre national de la cinématographie.

The American Comic Book Industry and Hollywood traces the evolving relationship between the American comic book industry and Hollywood from the launch of X-Men, Spider-Man, and Smallville in the early 2000s through the ascent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Arrowverse, and the Walking Dead Universe in the 2010s. Perren and Steirer illustrate how the American comic book industry simultaneously has functioned throughout the first two decades of the twenty-first century as a relatively self-contained business characterized by its own organizational structures, business models, managerial discourses, production cultures, and professional identities even as it has remained dependent on Hollywood for revenue from IP licensing. The authors' expansive view of the industry includes not only a discussion of the "Big Two," Marvel/Disney and DC Comics/Time Warner, but also a survey of the larger comics ecosystem. Other key industry players, including independent publishers BOOM! Studios, IDW, and Image, digital distributor ComiXology, and management-production company Circle of Confusion, all receive attention. Drawing from interviews, fieldwork, archival research, and trade analysis, The American Comic Book Industry and Hollywood provides a road map to understanding the operations of the comic book industry while also offering new models for undertaking trans- and inter-industrial analysis.

Both comics studies and adaptation studies have grown separately over the past twenty years. Yet there are few in-depth studies of comic books and adaptations together. Available for the first time in English, this collection pores over the phenomenon of comic books and adaptation, sifting through comics as both sources and results of adaptation. Essays shed light on the many ways adaptation studies inform research on comic books and content adapted from them. Contributors concentrate on fidelity to the source materials, adaptation and myth, adaptation and intertextuality, as well as adaptation and ideology. After an introduction that assesses adaptation studies as a framework, the book examines comics adaptations of literary texts as more than just illustrations of their sources. Essayists then focus on adaptations of comics, often from a transmedia perspective. Case studies analyze both famous and lesser-known American, Belgian, French, Italian, and Spanish comics. Essays investigate specific works, such as Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Castilian epic poem Poema de Mio Cid, Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, French comics artist Jacques Tardi's adaptation 120, rue de la Gare, and Frank Miller's Sin City. In addition to Marvel Comics' blockbusters, topics include various uses of adaptation, comic book adaptation of literary texts, narrative deconstruction of performance and comic book art, and many more.
