Celsus penned the earliest known detailed attack upon Christianity. While his identity is disputed and his anti-Christian treatise, entitled the True Word, has been exclusively transmitted through the hands of the great Christian scholar Origen, he remains an intriguing figure. In this interdisciplinary volume, which brings together ancient philosophers, specialists in Greek literature, and historians of early Christianity and of ancient Judaism, Celsus is situated within the cultural, philosophical, religious and political world from which he emerged. While his work is ostensibly an attack upon Christianity, it is also the defence of a world in which Celsus passionately believed. It is the unique contribution of this volume to give voice to the many dimensions of that world in a way that will engage a variety of scholars interested in late antiquity and the histories of Christianity, Judaism and Greek thought.

Le colloque international sur la violence dans les mondes de l’Antiquité dite classique réuni des historiens soucieux d’explorer des domaines différents mais complémentaires. Leur préoccupation a été d’abord de comprendre quelle était la représentation de la violence dans les sociétés grecque et romaine grâce à une analyse des discours produits, qu’ils aient été textes ou images. À partir de ces prémisses, ils montrent quelles normes ont structuré le système social, ils élargissent et enrichissent la place accordée à la violence intra-familiale, tout en s’inscrivant résolument dans les actuelles interrogations sur le genre. En abordant le domaine de la justice, qu’elle ait été vengeance ou recherche d’autres formes d’équilibre, les auteurs analysent la mise en relation entre la violence et le politique. Ils n’ont pas négligé bien sûr la guerre, où la violence est à la fois externe aux groupes affrontés et interne au monde des soldats, par l’effet de la brutalisation inhérente à leur pratique. Enfin la violence, qui n’est pas non plus absente des relations diplomatiques, renvoie à un des problèmes initialement posés, celui de sa mise en scène et de son institutionnalisation.

The concepts of memory and experience have stimulated interest in a wide range of recent cultural studies. In the history of scholarship on religion in Mediterranean antiquity, scholars have focused on the emotional dimension of both terms by employing the concepts of'Christianity'and its derivative,'oriental religion'. Only recently analyses in this field started focusing on interaction and individual experience. Research initiatives at Palermo and Erfurt have taken up this lead and brought together a group of scholars testing such approaches for new perspectives on the history of religion in the Greek and Roman world. This volume reviews the cognitive and emotional dimensions of such experiences in their diverse local, social, and ritual contexts. Memory likewise opens a window onto the interaction of individual and society. Contributions address the individual processes of memorialization and remembrance. They analyse the collective evocation of memories and their shaping of individual memory.
