To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Cosimo I de' Medici, the Medici Library of Laurentian exhibits on display the books of the Grand Duke, partly owned in his private library and partly collected by him in order to expand the collection of the public one designed by Michelangelo. The manuscripts, all preserved at the Laurentian, collect among other things the Lives of the Grand Duke, texts of polyphonic music as well as scientific works, translations of classical texts and even a Geographia of Toomeo from which are drawn the maps made by Egnazio Danti, affixed to the doors of the closets of the Wardrobe Hall of the Palazzo Vecchio. Many of the codes in the second section of the exhibition come from the Library of the Basilica of San Lorenzo. By Cosimo's behest, other volumes were transferred from the Library of St. Mark, the City of San Gimignano, and the library of the Badia of St. Saviour to The Seventh. The entire catalog is illustrated. Each manuscript on display is accompanied by an in-depth explanatory sheet. --Mandragora
