»Identikit for Latin America« is a collection of essays compiled by Gustav Siebenmann on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The first section is given over to fundamental considerations on cultural comparison and cultural identity. These are followed by essays on the quest for Latin American identity, the changes undergone by the image of Latin America in the mentality and literature of German-speaking nations, the role of the latter in the history of the continent, and their contribution to research on the region. After a comparison of the centenary celebrations to mark the discovery of America, the volume closes with a discussion of development problems. »Suchbild Lateinamerika« ist eine Essaysammlung, die Gustav Siebenmann zum Anlaß seines 80. Geburtstags zusammengestellt hat. Es sind zunächst grundsätzliche Überlegungen zum Kulturvergleich und zur kulturellen Identität. Danach folgen Arbeiten über die Identitätssuche der Lateinamerikaner, über den Wandel des Lateinamerikabildes in Mentalität und Literatur der Deutschsprachigen, ferner über deren Rolle in der Geschichte des Kontinents sowie über deren Beitrag zur Forschung. Nach einem Vergleich der Zentenarfeiern der Entdeckung Amerikas folgt eine Diskussion über die Entwicklungsproblematik.

Les travaux en anthropologie de la santé sont de plus en plus soumis à l'évaluation de comités fondée sur l'éthique médicale de la recherche. Ces avis qui souvent mettent en danger le sens ou la conduite de la recherche, suscitent une défiance de la part de chercheurs qui leur opposent le « vrai travail éthique » réalisé sur le terrain. Cet article décrit d'abord la réflexion éthique menée en matière de recherche sur le sida hors du terrain, dans des espaces d'échanges internationaux et dans les comités. Il tente, notamment à partir de deux études de cas, de préciser les lieux, le temps et la « forme » que peut prendre le travail éthique. Il montre que l'anticipation qu'impose la soumission de projets aux comités peut, à la condition qu'elle ait lieu dans un cadre qui permette les échanges, favoriser une sensibilité à l'éthique qui dépasse les limites de l'application de règles. Bien que le champ de la santé impose des questions propres, cette réflexion concerne également d'autres champs. Research projects in medical anthropology must more and more frequently be validated by review boards whose evaluation procedures are based in medical ethics. They often suggest procedures that may jeopardize the meaning of research, creating distrust amongst researchers who argue instead for "genuinely ethical [field] work". This article first describes ethical reflections about research on HIV that occur far from the field, in international social spaces and in committees. Based on two case studies, it tries to define the places, time and "shape" of ethical work. It shows that the anticipation imposed by the submission of project applications to a committee may, when in a context that allows exchange, favor sensitivity to ethics that goes beyond applying rules. Although the field related to health raises specific questions, these issues are also relevant in other fields.
