"Der Kern einer supplicatio war das kollektive Gebet der Stadtbevölkerung an die je nach Anlass zuständigen Gottheiten. Es konnte als Bitte vor Kriegen oder neuen Zeitabschnitten formuliert sein, aber auch zur Sühnung von Prodigien oder im Zuge militärischer Krisen. In der Rückschau dankte man den Gottheiten nach erfolgreichen Schlachten oder herausragenden Ereignissen. Im Zentrum der Studie steht erstmals die entwicklungsgeschichtliche Betrachtung dieses Ritualkomplexes. Über eine detaillierte Auswertung der einschlägigen literarischen und epigraphischen Quellen wird gezeigt, welchen Einfluss die supplicatio als wiederkehrendes, integratives und anpassungsfähiges Element auf soziale und politische Umbrüche hatte. Beginnend mit den ersten bekannten Bezeugungen über Veranstaltungen im fünften vorchristlichen Jahrhundert wird bis zum Ende der Römischen Republik analysiert, wie die supplicatio auf aktuelle Bedürfnisse ausgerichtet wurde." --

'Christ on a Donkey' reveals Palm Sunday processions and related royal entries as both processional theatre and highly charged interpretations of the biblical narrative. Harris's narrative ranges from ancient Jerusalem to modern-day Bolivia, from veneration to iconoclasm, and from Christ to Ivan the Terrible. A curious theme emerges: those representations of Christ's entry into Jerusalem that were labelled blasphemous or idolatrous by those in power were most faithful to the biblical narrative of Palm Sunday, while those that exalted power and celebrated military triumph were arguably blasphemous pageants.

"Processions formed an essential part of the presentation of liturgical ceremonies during the Middle Ages. They marked the openings and closings of services and the ritual movement from place to place within the church as the ceremony required that specific actions occur at a specific location. Processions always received musical accompaniment. This edition assembles the processional chants that served as the background to these liturgical movements from repertories that originated across the Latin West primarily during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and presents them in a modern, critical edition with full commentary. It includes representative examples from the Aquitanian, Beneventan, Italian, Spanish, Nonantolan, Roman and northern French repertories, as well as those from German-speaking lands and the Pontificale Romano-Germanicum.
