Abstract

Vonnard’s publication on UEFA is both in empirical and conceptual terms a pioneering work for the research on European football. It is the first comprehensive source-based study on UEFA and offers new insights into the working methods and self-images of a key player in European cooperation. At the same time, the book provides a wealth of information for the historical analysis of international sports organisations.” — Jürgen Mittag, Jean Monnet Chair of Political Science and Sport, German Sport University Cologne, Germany "While it may not presently be possible to get inside the walls of UEFA's world, we do have this granular account of the organization's early days and origins. Vonnard has gone beyond the obvious to find sources in all sorts of places and retell the story with great professionalism and meticulousness. It is a history about one of the very few examples of detente years before there was detente." —Robert Edelman, Professor of History at the University of California San Diego, USA “Vonnard demonstrates the vital role that football played in integrating Europeans and European society in the turbulent post-war era of decolonisation and the Cold War, helping to bridge the gap between the Western and Eastern blocs, and lay the basis for decades of European cooperation in sport and beyond.” — Matthew Taylor, Professor of History, De Montfort University, UK Philippe Vonnard is SNSF Senior Researcher at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.-

Abstract

"From Accra and Algiers to Zanzibar and Zululand, Africans have wrested control of soccer from the hands of Europeans, and through the rise of different playing styles, the rituals of spectatorship, and the presence of magicians and healers, have turned soccer into a distinctively African activity." "African Soccerscapes explores how Africans adopted soccer for their own reasons and on their own terms. Soccer was a rare form of "national culture" in postcolonial Africa, where soccer stadiums and clubhouses became arenas in which Africans challenged colonial power and expressed a commitment to racial equality and self-determination. New nations staged matches as part of their independence celebrations and joined the world body, FIFA. The Confederation africaine de football democratized the global game through antiapartheid sanctions and increased the number of African teams in the World Cup finals." "In this compact, highly readable book Alegi shows that the result of this success has been the departure of huge numbers of players to overseas clubs and the growing influence of private commercial interests on the African game. But the growth of women's soccer and South Africa's hosting of the 2010 World Cup also challenge the one-dimensional notion of Africa as a backward, "tribal" continent populated by victims of war, corruption, famine, and disease."--Jacket.

Abstract

Although soccer had long been the world's game when Michael J. Agovino first encountered it in 1982, here it was just a poor cousin to American football, to be found on obscure UHF channels and in foreign magazines. But as Agovino himself passionately pursued soccer, Americans got wise and turned it into one of the most popular sports in the country. Agovino's love affair with soccer is a portrait of the game's culture and an intimate history of the sport's coming of age in the United States.Agovino's quest takes him from the unkempt field in the Bronx where he taught himself to play

Abstract

The Football Association of England has become a multi-billion pound industry. But how did English football become not only the defining sport of the nation but also one of the most successful sports in the world? With The Leaguers, football historian Matthew Taylor tells the story of the early days of professional football in England, revealing the distant origins of today's game. Making extensive use of archival materials from football clubs, unions, and associations, Taylor presents a compelling picture of football teams and players in the early days of the twentieth century, tracing the development of the system of professional teams from the hundreds of town, club, and school teams that dotted the countryside. The top tier of those teams comprised the Football League that, by the 1920s, was synonymous with the very idea of professional football in the minds of fans and sportswriters alike. The Leaguers illuminates the role played by the Football League-and by successful clubs in the League such as Arsenal and Aston Villa'as the rules, standards, and structure of the modern game were being codified. Taylor also considers the careers and influences of early players, including such well-known names as Billy Meredith, "Dixie" Dean, and Alex James. As football's popularity grew and sports media proliferated, players found themselves becoming national stars, their portraits on cigarette cards bought by fans throughout England. The first full-length history of the early days of the Football League, The Leaguers will be essential reading for football fans who want to know how their favorite sport grew from modest origins to the worldwide phenomenon that is English football today.

Abstract

Abstract

Though it burst into public consciousness only with the 1999 World Cup, women's soccer has been around almost as long as its male counterpart, flourishing in England during and after World War I. From the rise of women's soccer following Title IX legislation in the early seventies to the watershed 1999 World Cup performance that turned the American team into instant celebrities, soccer is now the most popular sport for girls and women, with participation growing exponentially worldwide. Beyond "Bend It Like Beckham" presents the first in-depth global analysis of the women's game-bo
