Abstract

2019 commemorates the 450 anniversary of the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The city of Dilbeek celebrates this with an open-air exhibition with installations by several international artists and designers. The exhibition is a time warp and sets Bruegel against a 21st century backdrop. We follow the gaze of the painter when he was composing his impressive landscape paintings. The chapel of Sint-Anna-Pede and the watermill of Sint-Gertrudis-Pede, two monuments painted by Bruegel, are the starting and ending point for a walk along fifteen installations. Fifteen artists, designers and architects designed a trail through the landscape that inspired Bruegel five centuries ago. They construct pavilions, make structures, design imaginative landscapes and tell stories that interact with places, play with the perception of the space, create new unexpected environments, work disorienting or help to focus attention. Featuring artworks by Rotor, Filip Dujardin, Koen van den Broek, Erik Dhont, KGDVS & Bas Pincen, Bas Smets, Lois Weinberger, Landinzicht, Guillaume Bijl, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, Futurefarmers, Georges Rousse and Josse De Pauw. Curator of 'De Blik van Bruegel' is Stefan Devoldere, professor and dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Art at Hasselt University. Exhibition: Dilbeek, Belgium (04.07.-31.10.2019).

Abstract

From land art and earthworks in the 1960s to conceptual art of the new millennium, ecology-focused art has been a prominent genre in the art world for decades. This book offers a look into the recent explosion in contemporary art that deals directly with nature, the environment, climate change, and ecology. Organized into six thematic chapters, Art & Ecology Now moves through the various levels of artists’ engagement, from those who document and reflect on nature, to those who use the physical environment as the raw material for their art, and committed activists who set out to make art that transforms both our attitudes and our habits.

Abstract

Eco-Visionaries' presents contemporary positions in art and architecture seeking answers to current environmental problems that transcend mainstream notions of sustainability. This comprehensive volume is a companion to the collaborative 2018 exhibition endeavored by four participating European museums. Each show maintains a different focus and curatorial approach, and for each, artists investigate alternative visions regarding humankind's place on earth through video and sound works, paintings, and installations. While the series of exhibitions presents the works of artists and architects who offer critical reflections on pressing contemporary issues, the book unites research, essays, as well as a survey of the artworks.
