In Weak and Widespread modernity stands as a contrasting operative practice when compared to that of the 20th century which was based on finding definitive solutions to old and new problems of industrial society. Todays architecture and urban planning tends to operate through reversible solutions taking their references from models that are incomplete imperfect and elastic. Precisely for this reason they are capable of withstanding the continuous processes of innovation.

Many architects dream of being able to create the same spaces as in Spiller's designs. His work probes into the world of hyper-reality and cyberspace. It investigates a world that is yet to be reached and opens up possibilities for architects.

An Atlas of Another America' is a work of speculative architectural fiction and theoretical analysis of the American single-family house and its native habitat, the suburban metropolis. Mass-marketed and endlessly multiplied, and the definitive symbol of success in America and around the world, the suburban house has also become a global economic calamity and an impending environmental catastrophe. Yet, as both object and idea, it remains largely unexamined from an architectural perspective. This new book fills this gap through projects and essays that reflect upon, critique, and reformulate the equation that binds the house as an object to the American dream as a concept. Adopting tone and format of an historical architectural treatise, it builds upon an eminent lineage of architectural research from Piranesi and Ledoux to Branzi and Koolhaas in which imaginary but not implausible worlds are constructed through drawing in order to reframe reality and reorient the discipline towards new territories of action.

"The world's growing vulnerability to large scale risks is prompting action at the global scale. This book proposes that architects have played an under recognized but important role in imagining the future of the planet through world-scale projects, while examining the institutional and political scenarios that would make this possible. In so doing, they've reflected on the planetary repercussions wrought of diverse political, social, technological and environmental currents. Rather than indulging in the cliché of the megalomaniac architect, this book aims to presents a discipline reflecting on its own responsibilities, in which geographic and holistic considerations inform ethical and aesthetical positions. From Le Corbusier to Buckminster Fuller from Zaha Hadid to Super Studio and Design Earth, it provides a historical reference of 50 speculative projects from 1882 to the present. The book is the first compilation of its kind, as well as a critical reflection on the world as an architectural project. Curiously, architects have undertaken the world as a project before the advent of contemporary globalization and its associated risks. Their 'ecumenal' aspirations date back to the 19th century. While these visions may not resemble what globalization has produced in terms of physical environment, some tend to be anticipatorily critical of the inequalities it would eventually generate, and of the morass that urbanization would bring about. Some others caution against mistaking imagining the world as a totality for controlling it as such, while they stress the need for an architectural vocabulary to make it legible. The book shows how the world has been a rich domain for the modern architectural imaginary. It is also an invitation to reclaim the scale and challenges of the world, the whole world, as a vital architectural project" [Publisher]

The experimental provides architects with a vital means to test ideas and the untried. Like authors and artists, architects harness the power of fiction to explore alternative models of society and push the boundaries of the possible. Though these imaginings can be influential aesthetically, like the prisons of Piranesi or the cities of Lebbeus Woods, they remain largely confined to paper or the screen - unbuilt. By injecting the experimental with a new realism, however, speculative design has the potential to advance new inclusive, equitable and desirable futures. Showcasing cutting-edge insight, this Design Studio volume advocates the inclusion of the visionary in the architectural design process. It explores the real-world application of near-future fantastical storytelling and the power of imaginative literacy. Articles cover subjects such as plausible impossibilities, other worlds, terraforming, activism, democratising design, future innovations and education, to name but a few. Departing from unrealistic utopian or dystopian visions, they empower plural design reactions in response to real-life scenarios. What impacts might a generational wave of ethical non-monogamy have on the way we use space and the future design of our built environment? Or the introduction of a universal basic income? Or the ready availability of lab grown meat? Thinking, imagining, designing, storytelling ... these are political acts. How will you use your vote?

Themenfelder: City – Energy – Biodiversity – Connecting – Work – Digital Processes Ausgewählte Projekte als Case Studies Texte u. a. von Amy Frearson, Georg Vrachliotis, Giovanna Carnevali, Maria Aiolova, Gilles Retsin, André Wilkens, Marjan Colletti und Raoul Bunschoten Monograph questioning What if research, science and architecture were merged? LAVA is an architecture studio founded by Tobias Wallisser, Chris Bosse, and Alexander Rieck with offices in Germany, Vietnam, and Australia. The German Pavilion for Expo 20 is an example of the eloquence with which LAVA responds to issues of the day. The three core themes of the book – Cities of the Future, Biodiversity, as well as Energy and Sustainability – are complemented by the subjects “Connecting Minds,” meaning social and political architecture, “Digital Processes and Technologies,” and “New Work” and explored together throughout the six chapters of this book. In addition to projects and their derivation, architectural and sociological thinkers elaborate on their ideas on these topics – creatively, speculatively, and thoughtfully.
