Abstract

Information behavior studies are a growing body of research that highlights the importance of information for everyone in the information age. This e-book presents an international and diverse range of studies and insights into the current state of theories and models of information behavior. There is an emphasis on the socialpersonalhuman dimensions of information seeking using social science methods and theoretical frameworks. The studies particularly draw on the methods and theories of anthropology, sociology and psychology to produce interpretations of the way in which information is experienced in the lives of individuals working as critical care nurses in a medical environment, the information seeking behavior of the visually impaired, the social interactions within knitting circles in public libraries, and attempts to apply information behavior theory to the design of information solutions. Collectively the papers contribute more generally to our understanding of information behavior theory and models, including the medical and retrieval contexts.

Abstract

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Glasgow and to the Fourth ACM SIGIR Conference on Information Interaction and Retrieval (CHIIR'19). The number of contributed papers and short papers, and the number of conference attendees, clearly demonstrate the value of this unique forum for researchers and students interested in the user-centered aspects of information interaction and information retrieval. We are very pleased to see a great range of topics and institutions represented in the programme for this edition of the CHIIR conference series. We would like to thank the people and institutions who have contributed to making CHIIR'19 a success. We first thank the authors for providing the content of the conference program. The three Program chairs, Hideo Joho, Vanessa Murdock and Pernilla Qvarfordt invested a huge amount of time and effort in organizing the paper reviewing and selection process for the full and short papers, and in putting together a very interesting program, with the help of the Senior Program Committee and the Program Committee. We are grateful for the efforts of the Tutorial Chair, Catherine L. Smith, the Workshops Chairs, Stephann Makri and Suzan Verberne, the organizers of the Doctoral Consortium, Yashar Moshfeghi and Heather O'Brien, the Demos and Resources Chairs, Jiyin He and Frank Hopfgartner, the Publicity Chair, Diane Pennington, and the Publications Chair, Craig Macdonald. We also very grateful to Mateusz Dubiel and Sylvain Daronnat, for leading the student volunteers and for all their support with our webpages. Finally, we thank the hosting organization, the University of Strathclyde, for their practical support we could wish for, our colleagues at the Technology and Innovation Centre for help with all the logistics of the conference, and the City of Glasgow for inviting us into the City Chambers for the welcome reception. We hope that you will find the program interesting and thought-provoking and the interaction with old and new friends and colleagues engaging and stimulating, - and that you will enjoy the city of Glasgow!.

Abstract

Why does information technology disappoint or enslave us? Why do so many information systems projects collapse? How can we do better? There are many technical, social, economic and other aspects to consider. How do we ensure we take all these into account as we research ITC or employ them? ICT affects our lives and world more profoundly than ever before. How may we understand it? This book employs philosophy to lay foundations for understanding the complexity of ICT, in five areas: The nature of information and computers, and artificial intelligence; The use of ICT at work and home, for serious and less-serious use; The ICT features that annoy or delight us; Societal issues, such as surveillance, e-government, ICT in developing countries, climate change, what technological progress is and what is the role of ICT as a whole and of the information systems field; ICT development - including computer programming, knowledge engineering and project management. The ideas in this book emerge from five decades of experience of the author with ICT, across industry, the professions and academic life. Information systems researchers will enjoy this book because it offers them new ideas and fresh perspectives. On the 500th anniversary of the European Reformation, this book introduces and applies the Reformational Philosophy of mid-20th-century Dutch thinker, Herman Dooyeweerd, to contemporary challenges of the 21st century. Excitingly, this accessible philosophy is grounded in everyday experience and yields a rich seedbed of ideas, which researchers and practitioners can develop to their advantage.

Abstract

Significant amounts of our time and energy are devoted to creating, managing, and avoiding information. Computers and telecommunications technology have extended our regard for information and are driving changes in how we learn, work, and play. One result of these developments is that skills and strategies for storing and retrieving information have become more essential and more pervasive in our culture. This book considers how electronic technologies have changed these skills and strategies and augmented the fundamental human activity of information seeking. The author makes a case for creating new interface designs that allow the information seeker to choose what strategy to apply according to their immediate needs. Such systems may be designed by providing information seekers with alternative interface mechanisms for displaying and manipulating multiple levels of representation for information objects. Information Seeking in Electronic Environments is essential reading for researchers and graduate students in information science, human-computer interaction, and education, as well as for designers of information retrieval systems and interfaces for digital libraries and archives.
