PEACE AND FAITH: Christian Churches and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, composed of new essays, is the first collection to bring together writers from different faith communities to discuss the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement’s impact on one of the more fractious topics addressed by Christian denominations: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In so doing, it builds on interfaith projects under way for decades. Theology and politics intermingle in debates taking place in local churches, Christian NGOs, and national church meetings that define official policy. The debates revive and reframe the most basic values of Christianity and the questions church members seek to resolve: How do Christians today hew to the principles Jesus articulated? How can justice be pursued in the context of competing national narratives and historical understandings? What bearing do or should centuries of Christian violence against Jews and Muslims have on contemporary theology and ethics? Is it ethical, or even possible, to set aside millennia of Christian anti-Semitism in judging Israel’s conduct? What Christian values should be honored in pursuing Jesus’s mission of reconciliation today? How may the pursuit of truth be corrupted by passionate social witness? Can advocacy cross the line into hatred? These are among the critical questions this collection poses and attempts to address.

Qu'en 1971, André Chouraqui, déjà connu pour son travail sur la Bible et le dialogue entre les trois religions issues d'Abraham, vienne participer à une retraite spirituelle protestante, c'était déjà plus exceptionnel.Mais qu'au milieu des années trente, un jeune homme algérien d'origine juive, se lie d'amitié avec une infirmière protestante et traverse la France pour rencontrer dans un petit village d'Ardèche, Louis Dallière, un pasteur protestant ardent promoteur d'une foi confessante c'était totalement inouï ! Cette rencontre marquera profondément André Chouraqui car elle contribuera, avec bien d'autres expériences, à le tourner vers une quête spirituelle dont les fruits ont enrichi le dialogue religieux de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle.Ce texte inédit est publié quarante ans après avoir été écouté, médité et prié par les participants à la retraite annuelle de l'Union de prière (1971), communauté de l'espérance fondée en Ardèche par le pasteur Louis Dallière. Historical Jesus research, Jewish or Christian, is marked by the search for origins and authenticity. The various Quests for the Historical Jesus contributed to a crisis of identity within Western Christianity. The result was a move “back to the Jewish roots!” For Jewish scholars it was a means to position Jewry within a dominantly Christian culture. As a consequence, Jews now feel more at ease to relate to Jesus as a Jew. For Walter Homolka the Christian challenge now is to formulate a new Christology: between a Christian exclusivism that denies the universality of God, and a pluralism that endangers the specificity of the Christian understanding of God and the uniqueness of religious traditions, including that of Christianity.
