At the start of the seventeenth century the Leiden painter and printmaker Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) ranked as the most important Dutch artist of the sixteenth century. His prints were rare and collectors paid high prices for good impressions. Rembrandt, too, collected his prints and managed, by spending a great deal of money, to aquire the complete graphicoeuvre of the artist he most admired. Exhibition: Rembrandthuis, Amsterdam (2011).
