Changing River Channels is intended for all those with an interest in the dynamics of river channels and their management. Contributions are drawn from both the academic and river management communities and these provide perspectives based upon British, European and North American examples. The chapters are organised into four sections which consider the magnitude and dimensions of river channel adjustments over different timescales; the processes which influence those adjustments, focussing particularly upon the roles of sediment transport and storage, and of vegetation; the information sources that are available for assessing the degree and nature of change; and finally, perspectives on the management of changing river channels. This volume is one of two companion edited books to mark the contributions of Professors K.J. Gregory and D. E. Walling to research on drainage basin form and processes. Each presents a balanced range of contributions written by research colleagues and students.

Describes the use and misuse of the environment and where we seem to be headed as a species on the planet. Emphasizes the geographic aspects of problems, such as air pollution, locational factors, scales considerations, distributions and spatial associations. Provides an overview of the modern environmental dilemma and the factors which need to be examined in order to gain an understanding of the problem. Features a review of our planet's open lands and the effort to preserve and manage them.

Habitat Conservation examines the relationship between habitat and ecosystem dynamics. Over the last decade scientists have made advances in their understanding of this relationship and this has had major impacts on their approach to nature conservation management. In many habitats conservation management needs to take into account the physical dynamic processes such as the impact of air, soil and water as well as the biological processes. Covering habitats ranging from mountains to floodplains to coastal dunes and rivers this text discusses: how the biological and physical processes interact in each habitat explores the current and future impact of global warming and sea-level rise and; uses case studies to demonstrate how different habitats can be naturally managed and restored. Written by geomorphologists, hydrologists, climatologists and limnologists this is a fundamental text for masters and undergraduate students studying nature conservation, habitat ecology and environmental management. It will also be essential reading for all conservationists, environmental consultants, managers and engineers.

A practical approach to wetland restorationCan wetland restoration be successful? Tracing over two decades of progress in wetland restoration, the authors of this book come back with an affirmative, resounding "Yes." They draw on lessons learned in four long-term restoration projects from Florida, Wisconsin, Colorado, and California to clearly demonstrate how to achieve success in diverse regions and reverse wetland losses of the last two centuries. This pragmatic, goal-oriented approach avoids the polarization that typically characterizes the subject, while offering a wealth of useful technical information. Key public policy issues surrounding wetland restoration today as well as future directions are also thoroughly examined.A timely, indispensable resource for engineers, scientists, and professionals involved in wetland restoration and floodplain and wetland management, < DIR> A Case for Wetland Restoration: < / DIR> illustrates the importance of wetlands and wetland restorationDebunks the notion that wetlands can't be successfully restoredDescribes the shift in federal public policy from the destruction to the restoration of wetlandsExplains how Section 404 of the Clean Water Act has worked in the interest of the environmentAnalyzes landmark projects with sufficient history to yield reliable lessons
