The present volume includes papers on Egyptological language studies presented at the Sixth International Conference of Egyptian Linguistics (Crossroads VI) held in January 2020 at Uppsala, Sweden. The conference aimed at providing a venue for discussion and exchange of ideas between scholars focusing on linguistic aspects of Ancient Egyptian and those with a more philological interest in the interpretation and cultural analysis of texts. Written by leading experts in the field, the papers brought together here cover a wide range of topics that range from syntax, semantics and morphology, to pragmatics, graphemics, cognitive aspects of language, and textual analysis. All stages of the language, from the Egyptian of the Pyramid Age to Coptic used in Christian Egypt, are covered. This work will be of interest to all students of Egyptian written material as well as to a broader audience of linguists and philologists outside Egyptology.

"The thirty-nine articles in this volume, One Who Loves Knowledge, have been contributed by colleagues, students, friends, and family in honor of Richard Jasnow, professor of Egyptology at Johns Hopkins University. Despite his claiming to be "just a demoticist," Richard Jasnow's research interests and specialties are broad, spanning religious and historical topics, along with new editions of demotic texts, including most particularly the Book of Thoth. A number of the authors demonstrate their appreciation for Jasnow's contributions to the understanding of this difficult text. The volume also includes other studies on literature, Ptolemaic history, and even the god Thoth himself, and features detailed images and abundant hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic, Coptic, and Greek texts"--

©Electre 2016

This volume is paying homage to the memory of Werner Vycichl (1909-1999), one of the most outstanding figures of Semito-Hamitic (Afro-Asiatic) comparative linguistics. The contributions by well-known specialists comprise almost all principle branches of the Semito-Hamitic macrofamily. The volume is divided in five major sections following the areas of interest of W. Vycichl: Egyptology and Coptology, Semitic linguistics, Beja (Northern Cushitic), Chadic, and general Semito-Hamitic (Afro-Asiatic) comparative linguistics (Berber has been excluded, since we already have a separate Mémorial Werner Vycichl with articles only in Berberology). The volume is important for the researchers in all the linguistic fields enumerated above as well as for those interested in African or comparative linguistics in general.

In Interpreting Ancient Egyptian Narratives, Martin Pehal applies structural analysis to four New Kingdom narrative compositions. The study explains the strong configurational character of ancient Egyptian (mythological) thought which has the ability to connect various ontological levels of human experience with the surrounding world into complex synchronic structures. These symbolical systems are shown to be mediating between the various cultural paradoxes which were inherent to ancient Egyptian society. Axial role in this process is attributed to the institution of positional kingship represented by the pharaoh. Its transformative function is also put into relation to the special status of female characters who are shown to play the part of the "powerful powerless ones" further personifying the aspects of the mediating function of myth. Gradually, the study outlines a genuinely Egyptian "structural net" of basic mythemes and explains in what way it was possible for such a system to change and incorporate foreign mythological motifs especially from the Near East.
