In 1744 the London press reported the death of 'Dr. Desaguliers, a gentleman universally known and esteemed'. Since then John Theophilus Desaguliers has been largely neglected, but in early-eighteenth-century London the stocky and energetic man of Huguenot origin, always in clerical dress, was a familiar figure. While historians of Freemasonry still recall his significant contribution to the arly years of the Grand Lodge of England, he was at least as prominent as an experimental philosopher. At a time of raptidly increasing interest in things scientific, he was a leading popularizer of the ideas of Sir Isaac Newton. His important books on what we would now term physicas and engineering were based on lectures and innovative demonstrations presented in public and to the Royal Society. Drawing on research in several fields, and with an academie background in both science and the arts, the author presents an overdue description of Desaguliers's life and his rise from humble birth in La Rochelle to acquaintance with the nobility and even royalty. This account of the wide range of his skills and interests and the circles in which he moved adds colour to the study of the early years of eighteenth-century London and beyond.
