"Goy: Israel's multiple others and the birth of the gentile traces the development of the term and category of the goy from the Bible to rabbinic literature. Adi Ophir and Ishay Rosen-Zvi show that the category of the goy was born much later than scholars assume; in fact not before the first century CE. They explain that the abstract concept of the gentile first appeared in Paul's Letters. However, it was only in rabbinic literature that this category became the center of a stable and long standing structure that involved God, the Halakha, history, and salvation. The authors narrate this development through chronological analyses of the various biblical and post biblical texts (including the Dead Sea scrolls, the New Testament and early patristics, the Mishnah, and rabbinic Midrash) and synchronic analyses of several discursive structures. Back cover: This volume surveys the brief accounts of Israelite history written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek between the third century BCE and the first century CE and found in compositions that did not enter the Hebrew biblical canon. Engaging in a detailed discussion of study cases and collective analysis of over forty texts, it demonstrates the affinities this category exhibits with "biblical" summaries and the influence it betrays of Hellenistic and early-Roman period literary conventions. Inter alia, the novel features it displays and new topics with which it deals, the focus it places on individual figures, and the interest it displays in the temporal axis of history reflect a process of cross-fertilization. A la suite d’importantes découvertes à Qumrân (et dans le désert de Juda) de nombreux manuscrits bibliques et de leur publication progressive, plusieurs chercheurs ont voulu saisir l’occasion qui s’offrait ainsi pour reprendre à nouveaux frais l’étude de la LXX et réaffirmer son importance pour l’exégèse et sa place dans la compréhension de l’histoire la plus ancienne du texte biblique.La présente étude des confessions de Jérémie (on en dénombre habituellement 5 : Jr 11,18-12,6 ; 15,10-21 ; 17,12-18 ; 18,18-23 et 20,7-18) s’inscrit dans le cadre de cet effort scientifique qui tente de déterminer les rapports entre la LXX et le TM du livre de Jérémie. Le regard rétrospectif sur l’histoire de la recherche et la discussion sur la datation de la forme longue du livre de Jérémie qui en découle (chap. 1) vise à éclairer les différentes tendances majeures dans les travaux qui se consacrent à l’étude du livre de Jérémie. La partie centrale du livre (chap. 2) est consacrée à une étude comparative et critique détaillée de la forme textuelle hébraïque en TM et la forme textuelle de la LXX, dans le but de vérifier si le texte des confessions de Jérémie est proche ou éloigné dans les deux formes textuelles (TM et LXX). Nous cherchons ensuite à mettre en lumière (chap. 3), par une analyse approfondie de certains choix textuels opérés par chacune des deux formes textuelles, la manière propre dont chacune présente ou caractérise le personnage de Jérémie. Dans le dernier chapitre (chap. 4), nous nous demandons si l’étude des confessions peut éclairer le rapport chronologique (d’antériorité ou de postériorité) entre les deux formes textuelles et aider à établir un rapport de priorité de l’une par rapport à l’autre de ces deux formes textuelles et, éventuellement, de suggérer leur datation. Il ressort de cette étude synoptique minutieuse et critique faite sur les confessions que, de manière générale, les deux formes textuelles y représentent un texte commun. Le livre de Jérémie semble avoir gardé dans le TM comme dans la LXX des traces, des passages importants d’un livre conçu initialement pour être un seul et même livre. Néanmoins, les quelques différences (de type textuel et rédactionnel ou de type littéraire) relevées entre les deux formes textuelles (TM et LXX) dans les confessions ont permis de mettre en lumière le mouvement qui a surtout vu le texte évoluer du modèle hébreu de la LXX vers le texte hébreu massorétique. Quant à savoir quand et par qui ces retouches rédactionnelles ont été opérées, les indices relevés dans les textes parlent en faveur de la période ayant immédiatement suivi la fin de l’exil babylonien (à savoir la fin du 6e et le début du 5e siècle avant J.-C.) comme étant le moment le plus propice pour une activité littéraire d’une telle envergure.

Over 5,000 copies of the New Testament exist today and not one matches the other exactly. Determining how a copyist made changes to a manuscript - or, a scribe's habits - is an essential step in recovering the original text of the New Testament and for appreciating how it has changed over time. For the vast majority of manuscripts, there is no way to know which manuscript copied from which manuscript or, which manuscript is the child manuscript and which is the parent manuscript. Alan Taylor Farnes, however, has discovered twenty-two child manuscripts whose parent version is still known today. His letter-by-letter examination of four of these manuscripts sheds invaluable light on how scribes went about their work and provides a methodology for future studies. The essays by Shemaryahu Talmon (1920-December 15, 2010) presented in this fourth volume of his collected studies in English were written against the background of the momentous manuscript finds at various sites in the Judean Desert, including approximately 200 biblical or Bible-related manuscripts and manuscript fragments discovered at Qumran. These discoveries date from the crucial period of the turn of the era and afford scholars unprecedented information on the early transmission history of the biblical text.Talmon likens the transmission process (in agreement with Paul Kahle, and contrary to Paul de Lagarde) to a confluence of variant pristine traditions that Judaism, Christianity, and the Samaritan communities severally channeled into one fixed and closely circumscribed text form. It is his thesis that at least some of the "biblical" manuscripts and fragments from Qumran preserve original variants of the wording in the Masoretic Text, which eventually was recognized and transmitted in Judaism as the acclaimed and exclusively binding wording of the Hebrew Bible. These manuscripts and fragments evidence a "textual strategy" consisting of the interaction of the original authors and the transmitters of their work. Scribes and editors were minor partners of the authors. They did not refrain from occasionally changing wordings within a given range of "poetic license," often adapting literary techniques and patterns that had been used by the primary creators of the texts that they copied.The 18 essays reprinted in this volume relate to a variety of phenomena that affected the biblical literature in the stages of transition from oral tradition to hand-written transmission, initially in Paleo-Hebrew, then in the square alphabet, and ultimately in the promulgation of the Masoretic version in print.Talmon's articles published herein initially appeared over a period of about 50 years, thus giving expression to his developing thought regarding the transmission history of the biblical text up to the present time. In Scribal Habits in Sixth-Century Greek Purple Codices, Elijah Hixson assesses the extent to which unique readings reveal the tendencies of the scribes who produced three luxury manuscripts of Matthew’s Gospel. The manuscripts, Codex Purpureus Petropolitanus (N 022), Codex Sinopensis (O 023) and Codex Rossanensis (Σ 042), were each copied in the sixth century from the same exemplar. Hixson compares the results of a modified singular readings method to the number of actual changes each scribe made. An edition of the lost exemplar and transcriptions of Matthew in each manuscript follow in the appendices. Of particular relevance to New Testament textual criticism is the observation that the singular readings method does not accurately reveal the habits of these three scribes.

"Jewish texts and traditions. An expression of this was the remarkable turn to Bible translation. In the century and a half between Moses Mendelssohn's pioneering translation and the final one by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, German Jews produced sixteen different translations of at least the Pentateuch. Buber and Rosenzweig famously critiqued bourgeois German Judaism as a craven attempt to establish social respectability to facilitate Jews' entry into the middle class through a vapid, domesticated account of Judaism. Exploring Bible translations by Moses Mendelssohn, Leopold Zunz, and Samson Raphael Hirsch, I argue that each sought to ground a "reformation" of Judaism along bourgeois lines, which involved aligning Judaism with a Protestant concept of religion. They did so because they saw in bourgeois values the best means to serve God and the authentic actualization of Jewish tradition. Through their learned, creative Bible translations, Mendelssohn, Zunz, and Hirsch presented distinct visions of middle-class Judaism that affirmed Jewish nationhood while lighting the path to a purposeful, emotionally rich, spiritual life grounded in ethical responsibility"--
