The essays in this collection focus on two areas of inquiry: original editing problems associated with various atlases, from the earliest to the most recent, including the products of early author-publisher partnerships as well as modern multi-disciplinary editorial and cartographic teams; and the analysis of a variety of different atlases, to give a diverse picture of an important reference work as it has evolved through the ages. The papers throw light on the nature and history of the evolution of the atlas as a book, and also on the atlas as a 'text' of contemporary times. The atlas, one of the oldest types of geographic encyclopedias and reference works, has often been thought of as simply a group of maps bound together. Yet every atlas is conceived and shaped, put into meaningful order and made uniform in some way by its author, editor, or publisher. Editing Early and Historical Atlases was the title and focus of the twenty-ninth annual Conference on Editorial Problems, organized in honour of the completion of the final volume of the Historical Atlas of Canada.

Settlement names are the type of geographical names or toponyms that people come across most often. In Slovenia, their unification or standardization is handled by the Commission for Standardization of Geographical Names of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, which is based at the Anton Melik Geographical Institute of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The Commission operates mainly on the basis of UN resolutions on geographical names, Slovenian orthography and Slovenian legislation on geographical names, and publishes standardized geographical names in standardization documents (such as maps and gazetteers) and online on the Surveying and Mapping Authority of the Republic of Slovenia. There are more than 6,000 settlement names in Slovenia, a fifth of which are disputed for various reasons and should be corrected. The book ('Disputed names of settlements in Slovenia') first discusses basic terms in the field of geographical names, especially settlement names, then describes the methodology for determining disputed settlement name in Slovenia and proposes corrected names of disputed names, and finally presents standardized names on maps at a scale of 1: 1,000,000 and 1:250,000 and in the Register of Geographical Names or REZI, which is the largest database of geographical names in Slovenia.

This monograph (‘Kozenn's school atlas as a milestone in education') was released on the 150th anniversary of the publication of the first secondary-school atlas by Blasius Kozenn (a.k.a. Blaž Kocen). He grew up in a Slovenian farming family near Ponikva, Lower Styria. While working as a teacher, he realized he needed more new teaching aids and he advocated more modern methods of teaching. His cooperation with the publisher Eduard Hölzel was of key importance. Kozenn’s crowning accomplishment was the first successful school atlas in the Austrian Empire, published in 1861. It contained twenty-seven maps, of which three were on double pages, and was published in German, Hungarian, Czech, and Polish. The author followed the example of the leading German atlases of that time, but he thoroughly adapted it to local conditions, introduced several important new features, and ensured that its reprints and other atlases that used his as a model were constantly technically, artistically, and conceptually improved. Kozenn’s secondary-school atlas soon became the leading one in the German-speaking part of the empire, whereas in the Czech, Polish, and Hungarian schools his “small” atlases, which were more limited in their coverage and cheaper, were initially more successful. After Kozenn’s death, the publisher decided to maintain his well-established brand, and so even 150 years since its first publication the Kozenn-Atlas is still a prominent name.

A cultural landscape is simultaneously a complex phenomenon and a process~it is a medium and a result of human activities and perception. This monograph is based on a postmodern view of the landscape and it understands the landscape not only as a physical phenomenon, but especially as a social and cultural document. Reading this document discloses the layers of meaning and processes that comprise it. This study examines the understanding and perception of the spatial effects from the history of Slovenian Istria in the twentieth century. It does not deal with direct changes in cultural landscape features, but rather with people’s relationship to them, and so social representation theory is used to represent landscape as a complex phenomenon. The focus is on representations of the landscape and history, such as their appearance in various literary, professional, and scholarly texts. Any literature can be a source for scholarly study and can enable the creation of new geographical knowledge and awareness. V knjigi prikazujemo dojemanje in zaznavanje prostorskih učinkov posledic zgodovinskih dejstev v slovenski Istri v 20. stoletju. Niso nas zanimale neposredne spremembe sestavin kulturne pokrajine, ampak odnos ljudi do njih, zato smo uporabili teorijo družbenih predstav, s katerimi predstavljamo pokrajino kot kompleksen pojav. V empiričnem delu smo z računalniškim programom ATLAS.ti analizirali 147 besedil s skupno 3344 stranmi.
