Abstract

The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself.

Abstract

Digitisation enables open science. Digitisation has many aspects, in particular free access to scholarly publications and materials (Open Access), transparent review procedures (Open Peer Review) or open source technologies (Open Source). The programme Hamburg Open Science (duration 2018-2020) supports, among other things, cultural change in research. It is in this context that the present guide was created. It is intended to make the legal environment tangible. The guide first systematically elaborates the relevant areas of law. The second part answers legal questions about Open Science that come directly from universities and libraries. In this way, the guide is prepared and communicated in a practical manner. The authors of the guide are Dr. Till Kreutzer, partner at the law firm iRights.Law, and their research assistant Henning Lahmann. This second, completely revised and expanded edition was produced with the assistance of Dr. Ina Kaulen, Hamburg State and University Library Carl von Ossietzky.

Abstract

Digitisation makes open science possible. This has many aspects, in particular free access to academic publications and materials (Open Access), transparent peer review procedures (Open Peer Review) or open source technologies (Open Source). Supporting open science in Hamburg as a research location is the aim of the framework Hamburg Open Science. The guidelines developed in this context are intended to make this ecosystem legally tangible. In the first part, the guidelines systematically develop the areas of law concerned. The second part answers legal questions on Open Science that come directly from universities and libraries. In this way, a practice-oriented preparation and mediation can be achieved. The authors of the guide are Dr. Till Kreutzer, partner of the law office iRights.Law, and Henning Lahmann, research associate at iRights.Law.

Abstract

How does digitalisation affect adult and further education? The book shows the range of research perspectives and fields of application. Starting from basic theoretical research approaches, specific subject areas as well as application-related projects for the design of media-supported teaching-learning concepts are taken up. The contributions are not limited to technology-centred topics, but show the relevance of educational research for the design of the digital transformation. An interdisciplinary field of research and application is developed that cannot do without well-founded perspectives on adult education.

Abstract

"This is a must-read how-to guide if you are planning to embark on a scholarly digitisation project. Tailored to the specifications of the British Library’s EAP (Endangered Archives Programme) projects, it is full of sound, practical advice about planning and carrying out a successful digitisation project in potentially challenging conditions. From establishing the scope of the project, via practical considerations about equipment, work routines, staffing, and negotiating local politics, to backing up your data and successfully completing your work, Remote Capture walks you through every stage. Bursting with helpful hints, advice and experiences from people who have completed projects everywhere around the globe from Latin America to Africa to Asia, this book offers a taste of the challenges you might encounter and the best ways to find solutions. With a particular focus on the process of digitisation, whether using a camera or a scanner, Remote Capture is invaluable reading for anybody considering such a project. It will be particularly useful to those who apply for an EAP grant, but the advice in these pages is necessary for anyone wondering how to go about digitising an archive."

Abstract

With its emergence as a global power, China aspires to transform from "made in China" to "created in China". Mobilised as a crucial source for solid growth and "soft power," creativity has become part of the new China Dream. This anthology engages with the imperative of creativity by aligning it to three interrelated phenomena: boredom, shanzhai, and digitisation. How does creativity help mitigate boredom? Does boredom incubate creativity? How do shanzhai practices and the omnipresence of fake stuffs challenge notions of the original and authentic? Which spaces for expressions and contestations has China's fast-developing digital world of Weixin, Taobao, Youku and Internet Plus Policy opened up? Are new technologies serving old interests? Essays, dialogues, audio-visual documents and field notes, from thinkers, researchers, practitioners and policy-makers, contribute to explore, examine and problematize what is going on in China now, ultimately to tease out its implication to our understanding of "creativity".
