Erstmals wird die Museumslandschaft aller postsozialistischen EU-Mitgliedsländer untersucht. Wie stellen Museen den Zweiten Weltkrieg, Holocaust und sowjetische Verbrechen dar? Andere verlangen von ,Europa', ihr Leiden unter den Sowjets als größeres Übel anzuerkennen. This volume is the first to examine the museum landscape of all post-socialist EU member states. How do museums present the Second World War, the Holocaust, and Soviet crimes? As part of their nations' attempts to join the EU, some "invoke" Europe, aiming to prove their Europeanness by adopting international museification trends. Others demand that "Europe" recognizes their suffering under Soviet rule as the greater evil.

This book interrogates the nature of anti-Americanism today and over the last century. It asks several questions: How do we define the phenomenon from different perspectives: political, social, and cultural? What are the historical sources and turning points of anti-Americanism in Europe and elsewhere? What are its links with anti-Semitic sentiment? Has anti-Americanism been beneficial or self-destructive to its "believers"? Finally, how has the United States responded and why? The authors, scholars from a multitude of countries, tackle the potential political consequences of anti-Americanism in Eastern and Central Europe, the region that has been perceived as strongly pro-American.

Karl Polanyi's "substantivist" critique of market society has renewed topicality in the era of neoliberal globalization. Polanyi (1886-1964) is popular among critical theorists and radical political economists, but also with ecological activists, anti-globalization campaigners and all who sense that ongoing financial turmoil is symptomatic of a deeper crisis threatening the compatibility of capitalism and democracy. The author reclaims the polymath Karl Polanyi for contemporary anthropology, especially economic anthropology. The book furthermore takes his ideas back to Central Europe, where he grew up. The Polanyian approach is applied to the communist economy, with particular reference to the "market socialist" economy which evolved under János Kádár in Hungary. The same lens is used to investigate the consequences of the demise of communist power since 1990, primarily on the basis of ethnographic investigations in Hungary and South-East Poland. Stretching the discussion on Polanyi's great transformation -- for which there is considerable international interest -- in the context of neoliberalization onto the concept of Eurasia, and then bringing this into conversation with the rise of neo-nationalism in Hungary and Poland and beyond as the form that the great transformation is currently taking in the region, relates Hann's work powerfully to the current political turbulence.

What is 'typically' habsburgish about the network of cities that were under the rule of the imperial dynasty for several centuries? As a place of artistic and intellectual production, as an economic hub, as a decision-making centre, the limited space of the city interacted with the empire. The contributions brought together in this book study the influences and exchanges (economic relations, political culture, artistic productions) that shaped the territories governed by the Habsburgs in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary, Austria and America, from the modern era to the contemporary period. The traces of these interactions testify of the unique role played by urban cooperation in the development of a composite monarchy. Qu’y a-t-il de « typiquement » habsbourgeois dans le réseau des villes placées plusieurs siècles durant sous la domination de la dynastie impériale ? Lieu de production artistique et intellectuelle, cœur économique, centre décisionnel, l’espace limité de la ville agit en interaction avec l’empire. Les contributions rassemblées ici étudient les influences et les échanges (relations économiques, culture politique, productions artistiques) qui ont façonné les territoires gouvernés par les Habsbourg en Espagne, en Italie, aux Pays-Bas, en Hongrie, en Autriche et en Amérique, de l’époque moderne à l’époque contemporaine. Les traces de ces interactions témoignent du rôle exceptionnel qu’a joué la coopération urbaine dans le fonctionnement d’une monarchie composite. Als Ort der künstlerischen und intellektuellen Produktion, als wirtschaftliches Herz und als Entscheidungszentrum agierte der begrenzte Raum der Stadt in Wechselwirkung mit dem Reich. Die hier versammelten Beiträge untersuchen die Einflüsse und den Austausch (wirtschaftliche Beziehungen, politische Kultur, künstlerische Produktionen), die die von den Habsburgern regierten Gebiete in Spanien, Italien, den Niederlanden, Ungarn, Österreich und Amerika von der Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart prägten. Die Spuren dieser Interaktionen zeugen von der außergewöhnlichen Rolle, die die städtische Zusammenarbeit für das Funktionieren einer zusammengesetzten Monarchie spielte.
