Une fois encore, comme hier à propos de la famille en Europe ou de la place de l'écriture dans notre civilisation, Jack Goody vient perturber la ronde des historiens emportés par leurs certitudes. À la question soulevée par l'anthropologue britannique, on devine déjà ce qu'argueront les esprits chagrinés par cette interpellation d'exigence : comparaison n'est pas raison. Or, c'est bien de cela qu'il s'agit. La question ? C'est le « vol de l'histoire », c'est-à-dire la mainmise de l'Occident sur l'histoire du reste du monde. À partir d'événements qui se sont produits à son échelle provinciale, l'Europe a conceptualisé et fabriqué une représentation du passé toute à sa gloire et qu'elle a ensuite imposée au cours des autres civilisations. Le continent européen revendique l'invention de la démocratie, du féodalisme, du capitalisme de marché, de la liberté, de l'individualisme, voire de l'amour, courtois notamment, qui serait le fruit de sa modernisation urbaine. Plusieurs années passées en Afrique, particulièrement au Ghana, conduisent Jack Goody à mettre aujourd'hui en doute nombre d'« inventions » auxquelles les Européens prétendent, sous les plumes de Fernand Braudel, Joseph Needham ou Norbert Elias notamment, alors que ces mêmes éléments se retrouvent dans bien d'autres sociétés, du moins à l'état embryonnaire. Économiquement et intellectuellement parlant, seul un écart relativement récent et temporaire sépare l'Occident de l'Orient ou de l'Afrique. Des différences existent. Mais c'est d'une comparaison plus rapprochée que nous avons besoin, et non d'une opposition tranchée entre le monde et l'Occident, au seul profit de ce dernier.

Eurocentrism means seeing the world in Europe's terms and through European eyes. This may not be unreasonable for Europeans, but there are unforeseen consequences. Eurocentric history implies that a scientific modernity has diffused out from Europe to benefit the rest of the world, through colonies and development aid. It involves the imposition of European norms on places and times where they are often quite inappropriate. In Eurocentrism in European History and Memory, well-known scholars explore and critically analyse manifestations of Eurocentrism in representations of the European past from different disciplines - history, literature, art, memory and cultural policy - as well as from different geographical perspectives. The book investigates the role imaginings of the European past since the eighteenth century played in the construction of a Europeanist worldview and the ways in which 'Europe' was constructed in literature and art.

This book reevaluates "international knowledge" in light of recent scholarship in the fields of hermeneutics, ethnography, and historiography regarding the non-West, the past, and the present of international society.
