Abstract

Das Buch geht empirisch der Frage nach, worin sich sprachstarke und sprachschwache Kinder beim Schreiben unterscheiden. Die Untersuchung erweitert den Fokus damit über das wissenschaftlich vertieft untersuchte Lernalter als ausschlaggebenden Faktor für die interindividuelle Variation hinaus auf die globale Sprachkompetenz. Vor dem Hintergrund eines dynamischen Sprachansatzes untersucht die Studie das Schreiben als sprachliches Handeln und legt als Untersuchungskorpus nicht nur die Kindertexte als Ergebnis des Schreibens, sondern auch den Schreibprozess sowie die metasprachliche Kompetenz der Kinder zugrunde. Bei der Datenerhebung und Auswertung kamen sowohl standardisierte Sprachstandsmessungen, Schreibanlässe für das freie Schreiben, psychologische Tests sowie Fragebögen zum Einsatz. Die Schreibprozesse wurden durch Keystroke Logging erhoben, wodurch sämtliche Revisionen sowie der zeitliche Verlauf des Schreibens auf dem PC aufgezeichnet wurden. Mit der Kombination der verschiedenen Verfahren zeigt die Studie damit auch methodisch neue Zugänge zur Erforschung der Schriftsprachkompetenz auf.

"The "native speaker" is often thought of as an ideal language user with "a complete and possibly innate competence in the language" which is perceived as being bounded and fixed to a homogeneous speech community and linked to a nation-state. Despite recent works that challenge its empirical accuracy and theoretical utility, the notion of the "native speaker" is still prevalent today. The Native Speaker Concept shifts the analytical focus from the second language acquisition processes and teaching practices to daily interactions situated in wider sociocultural and political contexts marked by increased global movements of people and multilingual situations. Using an ethnographic approach, the volume critically elucidates the political nature of (not) claiming the "native speaker" status in daily life and the ways the ideology of "native speaker" intersects and articulates, supports, subverts, or complicates various relations of dominance and regimes of standardization. The book offers cases from diverse settings, including classrooms in Japan, a coffee shop in Barcelona, secondary schools in South Africa, a backyard in Rapa Nui (Easter Island), restaurant kitchens, a high school administrator's office, a college classroom in the United States, and the Internet. It also offers a genealogy of the notion of the "native speaker" from the time of the Roman Empire. In diesem Buch wird die grundlagentheoretische Frage nach der Konstitution des Gegenstandes der Sprachwissenschaft mit dem aktuellen Thema "Medien" verbunden: Welche systematischen Folgen haben die Ergebnisse der neueren, kulturwissenschaftlich geprägten Debatten um Medialität und Performativität für die linguistische Gegenstandskonstitution, insbesondere für den Kompetenzbegriff? Wenn es keine medienunabhängige Kompetenz gibt, inwiefern ist die Kompetenz dann trotzdem "frei"? In kritischer Abgrenzung vom "mentalistischen" Kompetenzbegriff einerseits und vom Mediendeterminismus andererseits wird im Anschluss an Wittgenstein die These entwickelt, dass sich Sprachkompetenz in vielen Fällen angemessener als "Sprachspielkompetenz" fassen lässt. Wie sich diese im Einzelnen ausbuchstabieren lässt, wird im Hauptkapitel anhand zahlreicher Beispiele untersucht. Dabei geht es immer darum zu zeigen, inwiefern der Sprachgebrauch zwar durch das jeweilige Medium "konturiert", aber nicht "determiniert" ist. Medien eröffnen Spielräume, und die Kompetenz der Akteure zeigt sich darin, wie sie sich dieser Spielräume im jeweiligen kommunikativen Kontext bedienen.

Abstract

The testing and assessment of language competence continues to be a much debated issue in foreign language teaching and research. Tout le monde utilise le français, toutes les professions en font (un ample) usage, sans exception. Or, l’emploi que l’on fait de notre belle langue est parfois un peu stéréotypé : on reproduit des phrases standards, toutes faites, en ne prenant pas toujours la peine de chercher des alternatives langagières. Or, des phrases plus jolies, qui expriment exactement le même message, il y en a – et en nombre ! Plutôt que de dire « Elle a beaucoup de chance », par exemple, pourquoi ne pas privilégier « Elle jouit d’une réussite insolente » ? Et à la place de « La population attend beaucoup de son nouveau président », ne gagnerait-on pas à écrire « Le nouveau président incarne l’espoir de tout un peuple » ? Telle est l’ambition du présent ouvrage : imaginer et recenser (de manière non exhaustive naturellement) ces phrases plus relevées à notre estime, placées en regard de phrases jugées plus ternes. Ni recueil d’expressions ni dictionnaire des synonymes, ce livre, sans équivalent sur le marché, doit permettre à chacun de fleurir son langage. Le français est notre patrimoine le plus précieux ; chérissons-le !

"Despite a history of hundreds of years of research analysing aspects of English grammar, there are still open problems which continue to baffle language researchers today. Such 'grammar mysteries' arise for a number of reasons: because the language is changing; because different speakers of the language adhere to distinct norms and thus introduce and maintain variation in the system; because there are differences between the grammar of spoken and written English. This book illuminates some of the complexities of the subject, the areas where new discoveries await and why it matters. Through a series of accessible and engaging case-studies on various aspects of grammar, from multiple negation to possession, the authors present grammar as an intellectual challenge.
