Distant Suffering, first published in 1999, examines the moral and political implications for a spectator of the distant suffering of others as presented through the media. What are the morally acceptable responses to the sight of suffering on television, for example, when the viewer cannot act directly to affect the circumstances in which the suffering takes place? Luc Boltanski argues that spectators can actively involve themselves and others by speaking about what they have seen and how they were affected by it. Developing ideas in Adam Smith's moral theory, he examines three rhetorical 'topics' available for the expression of the spectator's response to suffering: the topics of denunciation and of sentiment and the aesthetic topic. The book concludes with a discussion of a 'crisis of pity' in relation to modern forms of humanitarianism. A possible way out of this crisis is suggested which involves an emphasis and focus on present suffering.

"Luc Boltanski et Arnaud Esquerre restituent le mouvement historique qui, depuis le dernier quart du XXe siècle, a profondément modifié la façon dont sont créées les richesses dans les pays d'Europe de l'ouest, marqués d'un côté par la désindustrialisation et, de l'autre, par l'exploitation accrue de ressources qui, sans être absolument nouvelles, ont pris une importance sans précédent. L'ampleur de ce changement du capitalisme ne se révèle qu'à la condition de rapprocher des domaines qui sont généralement considérés séparément notamment les arts, particulièrement les arts plastiques, la culture, le commerce d'objets anciens, la création de fondations et de musées, l'industrie du luxe, la patrimonialisation et le tourisme. Les interactions constantes entre ces différents domaines permettent de comprendre la façon dont ils génèrent un profit : ils ont en commun de reposer sur l'exploitation du passé. Ce type d'économie, Boltanski et Esquerre l'appellent économie de l'enrichissement. Parce que cette économie repose moins sur la production de choses nouvelles qu'elle n'entreprend d'enrichir des choses déjà là ; parce que l'une des spécificités de cette économie est de tirer parti du commerce de choses qui sont, en priorité, destinées aux riches et qui constituent aussi pour les riches qui en font commerce une source d'enrichissement. Alors l'analyse historique revêt, sous la plume des auteurs, une deuxième dimension : l'importance, l'extension et l'hétérogénéité des choses qui relèvent désormais de l'échange ouvrent sur une critique résolument nouvelle de la marchandise, c'est-à-dire toute chose à laquelle échoit un prix quand elle change de propriétaire, et de ses structures. La transformation, particulièrement sensible dans les États qui ont été le berceau de la puissance industrielle européenne, et singulièrement en France, devient indissociable de l'analyse de la distribution de la marchandise entre différentes formes de mise en valeur.
