What precedes architecture? Architect and artist Malgorzata Maria Olchowska (° Bartoszyce, 1982) explores how personal and collective memories influence our view of the built environment. The book is built around a text by Vlad Ionescu (Faculty of Architecture and Art, PXL/UHasselt) in which he reflects on the work of Malgorzata Maria Olchowska, from 2009 to today. This is supplemented and illustrated by means of a visual essay in which Olchowska shows her work of the last five years. The design of the book is done by Ward Heirwegh. "There is the house we design as an adult, the one we drew as a child, the property of the vir probatus, the house that provides safety and the one that frightens the child. Olchowska's prints work with these imaginary alterations as façades or as side and interior views: they are the waiting rooms of architecture." Vlad Ionescu. Exhibition: Red Star Line Museum, Antwerp, Belgium (31.03. - 23.04.2023).

Architecture in Flanders and Brussels reflects a unique position in dealing with the existing built environment. Although the experimental approaches vary with different design methodologies, the audacity of the interventions remains, whether it is a medieval structure or a twentieth-century building. This book focuses on seven experimental approaches in preservation today: ensemble, void, reconfiguration, inside out, traces, mirror and nuance. These are explored through essays, realized projects and international references.

Gosia Malgorzata Olchowska is a Polish-Belgian architect and graphic artist (1982). As an architect, she is mainly known for her conceptual approach to drawings, sketches and collages, while her graphic artworks mainly focus on architecture. What precedes architecture? In this publication, architect-artist Malgorzata Maria Olchowska investigates how personal and collective memories influence our view of the built environment.According to Olchowska, there is no limit to the resilience of cities: “Cities go up and down, we see that now with the war in Ukraine or with the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Urban districts that are now in ruins will sooner or later be rebuilt.” The book is built around a text by Vlad Ionescu (Faculty of Architecture and Art, PXL/UHasselt) in which he reflects on Olchowska’s work, from 2009 to today. This is supplemented and illustrated by means of a visual essay in which Olchowska shows her work of the last five years.

The past thirty years have been crucial for architecture in the Low Countries, north and south of the border between Belgian Flanders and the Netherlands. Although both parts have developed a very different architectural culture with very different histories, they nonetheless connect with each other and function in complementary ways. Despite its differences, the selection of 65 projects presented in this book demonstrates a strong reciprocity between the architectural cultures of Flanders and the Netherlands, which in recent years seem to weave into each other more and more.

Official catalogue of the eponymous exhibition curated by Bovenbouw Architectuur. How do city and architecture flourish together? This question is central to the three-dimensional capriccio that displays a fictional Flemish urban environment. Over time, the informal city in Flanders and Brussels has developed a unique relationship with its architecture. This staged urban landscape reveals how historical layers, morphological peculiarities and unforeseen collisions are an endless source of energy for contemporary architectural production. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Composite Presence curated by Bovenbouw Architectuur in the Belgian Pavilion at the Biennale di Architettura 2021 in Venice, Italy. The exhibition and publication are a production of the Flanders Architecture Institute on behalf of the Flemish Minister for Culture, Jan Jambon. With texts by Sofie De Caigny, Irina Davidovici, Maarten Van Den Driessche, André Loeckx, Leo Van Broeck, Christian Rapp, Kristiaan Borret, Peter Vanden Abeele, Stefan Devoldere, Edith Wouters, Katrien Embrechts, Paul Vermeulen.

Monnikenheide in Zoersel is a residential care centre for people with mental disabilities. A special place for special people, it is examined from an architectural perspective for the first time in this book. In the fifty-year building history of Monnikenheide, different architects have gone in search of new spatial possibilities, with inclusion as leitmotif. This has created a unique landscape that transcends the boundaries of care architecture. Monnikenheide is a powerful architectural statement about the place of people in society who depend on care. The volume includes texts by Gideon Boie, Sofie De Caigny, Fredie Floré, Vjera Sleutel, Heleen Verheyden and Erik Wieërs.

Public interest in architecture and spatial issues has never been so high. The Flanders Architectural Review No.14 presents striking architecture from Flanders and Brussels. It assembles a broad range of recently completed architectural projects and situates them in the evolution of the socio-cultural domain in which they arose. The key concept for the selection of these projects is encapsulated in the title: When Attitudes Take Form. The editors chose architecture that demonstrates a convincing social commitment while also challenging and questioning its own discipline. These fifty projects display the multifaceted nature of the resulting architecture. Each of the twelve essays examines a current topic. The authors scrutinise the conditions for the production of contemporary architecture, such as the large-scale urban expansion project, the (post-) reconstruction landscape of the south-west corner of Flanders, and school building within the region. But they also explore the various positions adopted by architects: that of designer and also of researcher or committed citizen in the civil sector. With essays by Luce Beeckmans, Isabelle Blancke & Jürgen Vandewalle, Sofie De Caigny, Michiel De Cleene, Arnaud Hendrickx, Petrus Kemme, Katrien Laenen, Maarten Liefooghe, Petra Pferdmenges, Eireen Schreurs, Stichting Mevrouw Meijer, Helen Thomas and Maarten Van Den Driessche.

Flanders has had a Government Architect since 1999. The Government Architect advises public commissioning authorities with the aim of promoting the quality of architecture and the built environment. One of the methods used for this purpose is the Open Call. In the essays in this book, eight authors discuss, from different perspectives, why this influential 'competition' is not quite an architecture competition while at the same time being much more. Did architectural criticism in the 1990s help to pave the way for the Government Architect position and the Open Call? Does the key to quality lie in smart procedures? What is a 'strong' public commissioner in a democratic system? What does the Flemish Government Architect do and what has the Open Call achieved over the past twenty years? What do the distinct projects mean in their broader spatial context? Can architects satisfy a collective desire with singular designs? To what extent is the Open Call in line with the broadening of the practice of architecture and the evolving competition culture? Looking back on two decades of public commissions, this book presents current reflections on these issues.
