This book analyses the new and emerging role of the electricity distribution system operator (DSO) in the energy transition. The concept of a neutral market facilitator is introduced to characterise this role. In a world of active customers at the distribution level, the DSO will be a central actor, responsible for facilitating these transactions and entities such as energy sharing, peer-to-peer trading, flexibility ... In addition, the DSO will also increasingly rely on market transactions to purchase technical products and services. Another major contribution of this book is to advance the concept of private energy law. It thus proposes a different analytical lens than is usually used. From a private law perspective, this approach focuses on the nature of these new transactions and entities. Starting from an analysis of EU energy law, this book examines national implementation in Belgium and the Netherlands. It describes and compares the solutions adopted by each of the Belgian regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital) and the Netherlands.

[1st ed.] This book provides a critical introduction to the history and current meaning of the United States' Constitution. It is organised around two themes: Firstly, the US Constitution is old, short, and difficult to amend. These characteristics have made constitutional 'interpretation', especially by the US Supreme Court, the primary mechanism for adapting the Constitution to ever-changing reality. Secondly, the Constitution creates a structure of political opportunities that allows political actors, including political parties, to pursue the preferred policy goals even to the point of altering the very structure of politics. Politics, that is, often gives meaning to the Constitution. Deploying these themes to examine the structure of the national government, federalism, judicial review, and individual rights, the book provides basic information about, and deeper insights into, the way the US constitutional system has developed and what it means today.

Should Brexit or the election of Trump cause us to doubt our faith in democracy? Are ‘the people’ too ignorant or stupid to rule? Numerous commentators are beginning to seriously argue that the answer to these questions might be ‘yes’.In this humorous, take-no-prisoners book, Canadian-Irish author Roslyn Fuller kicks these anti-democrats where it hurts the most – the facts. Fuller shows how many academics, journalists, politicians and businesspeople have embraced the idea that there can be ‘too much democracy’, and deftly unravels their attempts to end majority rule, whether that be through limiting the franchise, pursuing Chinese ‘meritocracy’ or confining participation to random legislation panels. She shows that Trump, Brexit, or whatever other political event you may have disapproved of recently, aren’t doing half the damage to democracy that elite self-righteousness and corruption are. In fact, argues Fuller, there are real reasons to be optimistic. Ancient methods can be combined with modern technology to revitalise democracy and allow the people to truly rule.In Defence of Democracy is a sharp, witty and highly readable response to democracy’s critics, and an energetic contribution to the debate on the future of democracy.--

"Taking a multidisciplinary approach to the dynamics of political and economic decentralization in contemporary regimes, this comprehensive Handbook offers a critical examination of how the decentralization of governance affects citizen well-being. Expert contributors provide an analysis of theoretical developments and empirical approaches in the study of decentralization, exploring how decentralization is conceptualized and measured. Chapters examine central topics including how the degree and type of decentralization varies over time and across countries, how political decentralization affects the behaviour of parties and voters, and the social and economic consequences of decentralizing power. Offering a comparative perspective, the Handbook utilizes insightful international case studies from Latin America, North America, Western Europe and Asia. Attention is also paid to the impact of the Great Recession of 2008 and the Covid-19 pandemic on intergovernmental relations. This Handbook will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of political geography and geopolitics, regulation and governance, and international politics. It will also be useful for practitioners in these fields who are interested in decentralization"--

The world needs to turn away from fossil fuels and use clean, renewable sources of energy as soon as we can. Failure to do so will cause catastrophic climate damage sooner than you might think, leading to loss of biodiversity and economic and political instability. But all is not lost! We still have time to save the planet without resorting to 'miracle' technologies. We need to wave goodbye to outdated technologies, such as natural gas and carbon capture, and repurpose the technologies that we already have at our disposal. We can use existing technologies to harness, store, and transmit energy from wind, water, and solar sources to ensure reliable electricity, heat supplies, and energy security. Find out what you can do to improve the health, climate, and economic state of our planet. Together, we can solve the climate crisis, eliminate air pollution and safely secure energy supplies for everyone
