"The Historia Apollonii regis Tyri provided medieval Europe with one of its most popular and influential narratives. The tale incorporates many literary features characteristic of the ancient Hellenistic novel, but differs markedly from its Greek predecessors: its narrative is presented in condensed fashion, its description of characters and events straightforwardly functional, and the style of its Latin simple. While these features make the Historia Apollonii an oddity among the ancient novels, they contributed to the appeal the story held for later readers and writers in medieval Europe. The aim of this edition is to provide a text of the Latin Historia Apollonii as a reader from the later Middle Ages might have encountered it: as it appears in Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. Lat. 1961, a manuscript written in Italy in the middle of the fourteenth century."--

The origins of the anonymous Late Latin Story of Apollonius, King of Tyre (Historia Apollonii regis Tyri), are disputed, with the narrative commonly being seen as a Christianised folktale of a sub-literary character. Scholars focus mainly on questions of editing the text, seeking its origins (Greek or Latin, pagan or Christian) and exploring its afterlife. This literary and philological commentary discusses aspects of language, style, characterisation, intertextuality, and narrative technique in the earliest existing version of the Story of Apollonius, recension A. It situates the Late Latin text in the context of both ancient prose fiction and pagan and Christian literature. The author offers new arguments in the ongoing debate about the alleged Greek background of the Latin text, and his analysis enables readers to assess the literary character of this unique narrative, which contains elements of “popular” culture (e.g. riddles) and displays thorough knowledge of the Greek and Latin classics. The Commentary views the Story of Apollonius as a crossroad in which the notions of pagan and Christian, Greek and Latin, popular and sophisticated meet and interact in a complex way, reflecting the cultural atmosphere of the era of its creation.

Philostratus's colorful biography of Apollonius of Tyana, recounting the sayings and miracles of a Pythagorean sage, incidentally provoked a long-lasting debate between pagans and Christians. This volume, which completes the new Loeb Classical Library edition of the Life of Apollonius of Tyana, provides historical context for that much discussed third-century portrayal of a charismatic religious teacher. Here is a new translation of the surviving letters of Apollonius, augmented and illuminated by recent discoveries. These letters reveal Apollonius's personality and his religious and philosophical ideas. New for this edition is a selection of ancient reports about Apollonius from authors such as St. Jerome and St. Augustine. Philostratus's biography was quickly caught up in the religious struggles that marked the rise of Christianity. An official in Diocletian's empire named Hierocles used it as ammunition in an anti-Christian polemic, initiating a controversy that lasted well into modern times. The reply by Eusebius, the fourth-century bishop of Caesarea, was originally included in editions of the Life of Apollonius in order to serve as a spiritual antidote and to provide cover for the publishers; today it is an essential chapter in the history of Philostratus's masterpiece.

The story of Apollonius King of Tyre has rightly been called the most popular romance of the Middle Ages. From Iceland to Greece, from Spain to Russia, versions of this novel are recorded. It is the variation among the Latin versions and the numerous vernacular adaptations that make this story especially interesting. Shakespeare used and adapted it in his Pericles, Prince of Tyre. Its plot continues to fascinate us. Incest, deception, pirates, famine, sex and shipwreck form its tasty ingredients. Its links with the Greek novel, which today stands in the centre of scholarly interest, are striking. In this commentary the author even attempts to show that the novel originated in Greece, or more precisely Asia Minor, possibly inTarsus. The two recensions (RA and RB) are compared line by line, generally given preference to RA. All these aspects make the present book attractive to scholars of many different disciplines.

This is a commentary on the third book of Apollonius' Argonautica , one of the most influential and admired products of the Hellenistic era. The author sets out to deal comprehensively with all important aspects of the work; in particular, proper attention is paid for the first time to the poet's constant manipulation of the two Homeric epics; many thorny problems of text and interpretation are examined afresh; and a wealth of hitherto unadduced illustrative material drawn from Greek and Roman poetry of various genres and periods is used to shed light on a number of issues. The volume closes with a series of detailed digestive indexes dealing with diction, models and imitations, language and style, metre, transmission, mythology, religion, geography, ethnography and aetiology.
