Abstract

With the emerging newer trends in sexuality and clashes with the traditional practice of human sexuality, there is a need for introspection and a framework of ethical principles that may guide human sexuality and its practice. Human sexuality is more than a biological phenomenon. Open discussions about sexual identity and sexual practices will help people better understand themselves, others, and the world around them. This book gives a panoramic view of certain aspects of human sexuality in health and disease.

Abstract

The revolutionary act of imprinting gender into Caribbean thought is celebrated by Patricia Mohammed as she brings together decades worth of her critical essays that have influenced directions in feminism and in social thinking. A primary player in an ever evolving Caribbean gender discourse for over four decades, Mohammed has produced an interdisciplinary manifesto that establishes founding moments and ongoing debates in gender and feminist theory; she marks out thematic shifts in academia and activism, including the area of masculinity, that inform feminist political strategy in the region. Juxtaposing theoretical ideas with empirical flows of data, her strategic arrangement of this collection allows the reader to see the past and future as synonymous happenings, as temporal movements that rely on each other. Demonstrating a disciplinary promiscuity that is the cornerstone of her gender scholarship, the essays move between historical, biographical, popular culture and visual lens, revealing an intersectional analysis that is central to understanding of this region and to the current global condition. Writing Gender into the Caribbean: Selected Essays from 1988-2020, establishes a chronology that is faithful to the evolving theoretical concepts and ideas in the field of gender and development studies, while demonstrating that collaborative affinities across shared yet different histories remain the backbone of the ongoing feminist project of reconstructing knowledge. In the face of narratives that cast shadows on the value of evolutionary progress, Mohammed encourages us to take pause and recognise how far gender scholars and feminists have come in leaving the world more gender equitable than we found it.

Abstract

Abstract

"Today, the majority of the world's population lives in a country with falling marriage rates, a phenomenon with profound impacts on women, gender, and sexuality. In this exceptionally crafted ethnography, Sarah Lamb probes the gendered trend of single living in India, examining what makes living outside marriage for women increasingly possible and yet incredibly challenging. Featuring the stories of never-married women as young as 35 and as old as 92, the book offers a remarkable portrait of a way of life experienced by women across class and caste divides, from urban professionals and rural day laborers, to those who identify as heterosexual and lesbian, to others who evaded marriage both by choice and by circumstance. For women in India, complex social-cultural and political-economic contexts are foundational to their lives and decisions, and evading marriage is often an unintended consequence of other pressing life priorities. Arguing that never-married women are able to illuminate their society's broader social-cultural values, Lamb offers a new and startling look at prevailing systems of gender, sexuality, kinship, freedom, and social belonging in India today"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

The study provides a close analysis of literary works by women in late-18th- and early-19th-century Russia, with a focus on Anna Naumova, Mariia Pospelova, and Mariia Bolotnikova. Political, social and feminist theories are applied to examine restrictions imposed on women. Women authors in particular were fettered by a culture of feminisation strongly influenced by the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. As Sentimentalism and its aesthetics began to give way to Romantic ideals, some provincial Russian women writers saw an opportunity to claim social equality, and to challenge traditional concepts of authorship and a view of women as mute and passive.
