"Lazamon's Brut" is a twelfth-century historical poem that includes the first account of King Arthur in English, as an alternative to Norman accounts of English history. In "Translating Conquest", Kenneth Tiller argues that Lazamon uses the history of the ancient Britons to inspire the post-Conquest Anglo-Saxons to resist the suppression and marginalization of their language and to take an active role in writing English history. Presenting history as a matter of translation, Lazamon suggests that what we think of as 'history' is always open to question. He also argues for a central role the figure of King Arthur in the development of English history and historiography. This is the first study of the period to put Anglo-Norman and Angevin historiography in the context of colonialist and post-colonialist translation theory.
