Abstract

Abstract

The chapters focus on issues of women’s agency and on the potential for transformation produced by the experience of migration and the networks and communities fashioned by African-Caribbean women in diasporic spaces. They cover a range of disciplines including the study of visual art, auto-ethnographic analysis, in addition to socio-cultural and literary analyses. The work included in this anthology inserts, as central to its focus, considerations of gender and specifically the experiences of women in processes of migration, community formation and resistance. In its focus on concepts of diaspora and post-diaspora, the book investigates the potential of these theoretical terms to address the complexity of the diasporic experience. Concepts of post-diaspora have emerged in recent scholarship as a response to the challenges to traditional understandings of diaspora raised by the increase and speed of globalisation, and by the rise of transnationalism, both as a focus of academic study and as an everyday experience. Post-diaspora, like transnationalism, emphasises the fluidity of the migration process: post-diasporic identities emerge from the shifting formations of intra- and international communities.

Abstract

Taken from a special issue of the journal 'Mathematical Sociology', 'Evolution of Social Networks 'answers the question of whether we can apply evolutionary theories to our understanding of the development of social structures. Social life emerges as soon as persons establish relations with each other. Regardless of the specific social processes, these relations evolve into networks with coherent structures, structures that provide some actors with opportunities for action while impeding the progress of others. Social networks have increasingly become the focus of many social scientists as a way of analyzing these social structures. While many powerful network analytic tools have been developed and applied to a wide range of empirical phenomena, understanding the evolution of social organization still requires theories and analyses of social network evolutionary processes. Researchers from a variety of disciplines have combined their efforts in what is an indication of some very promis

Abstract

Corruption is generally referred to as bribery. This books deals with a different form of corruption: corruption caused by networks. Network corruption is the form of corruption in which the interaction of multiple actors within a social network results in corruption but in which the individual behaviour as such is not necessarily corrupt. The main reason for this research is that a gap appears to exist in the available theories on corruption: very little research is available on corruption by a network, nor does the network theory thoroughly discuss the risks or pitfalls of networks or how such a collective can become corrupt. As such this books offers a ?new layer? by clearly defining what distinguishes network corruption from corruption networks. The other reason for this research is the observation that policies and investigations appear to be limited in dealing with corruption in network-like structures.0This book deals with the question how corruption is linked to the functioning of social networks.
