Abstract

This technical book presents in a concise and concentrated form all the essential aspects of operating a ship. These include the basics of buoyancy and propulsion technology, ship safety, occupational safety and environmental protection on board as well as important auxiliary equipment. These aspects are explained in more detail using numerous examples. The book is intended for ship's engineers at university, on board and in shipping companies as well as for design engineers in the shipyard. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Schiffsbetriebstechnik by Manfred Pfaff, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. The contents Job description of the marine engineer - Rules and regulations - Hull, ropes, superstructures, anchor gear, corrosion protection and deck coverings - Propulsion systems - Ship operating systems/auxiliary systems - On-board power supply and electrical circuit examples - Occupational safety and ship safety, fire protection - Environmental protection in maritime shipping The target groups - Students of marine engineering - Lecturers and assistants at universities and technical colleges in the field of marine engineering - Engineers and masters in shipyards, technical personnel on ships of the navy and Christian seafaring - Nautical officers, technical staff in shipping companies and people interested in technology in general The Author Dr. - Eng. Manfred Pfaff, naval engineering reserve officer in the German Navy, received his doctorate from the Faculty of Mechanical and Marine Engineering at the University of Rostock. He is currently employed as head of waste flow control at the Detmold district government.

Abstract

This book discusses the Shinkansen, the world's first high-speed railway, which was born in Japan in 1964 and how it has developed up to the present day. In the 1950s, some European railways were trying to increase the commercial operating speed up to 160 km/h, and it was considered difficult to raise it to 200 km/h. Japanese engineers with excellent engineering ability post World War ll moved from the military to the railways to overcome the technological challenges realizing the high-speed railways using new approaches. The book discusses the technological barriers in speeding up the railway at that time and how these engineers overcame them in non-computer days. In the five decades since the Shinkansen began operating, there have been significant developments enabling high-speed, safe, and frequent train operation with high punctuality while conserving the environment. The book also describes today's highly evolved Shinkansen. The Shinkansen, which runs 440,000 km a day, has carried 13.3 billion people without a single fatality in 56 years. The book overviews factors that contributed to the Shinkansen's high safety record. This book is an excellent guide for those interested in the history of the world's first high-speed railway.

Abstract

In this book, a novel agent-based, realistic, and general motion model of pedestrians and (human-driven) vehicles is proposed. It can capture a large variety of interactions and be utilized to assess the applicability of different shared space schemes and in the advent of autonomous vehicles. Sustainable urban traffic and transport is a key to successful future development of our society. Urban traffic is predicted to increase further, and the lack of traffic space makes it undesirable to maintain today's strict separation of different modalities. Shared space design principles promote a flexible use of traffic infrastructure by enabling different traffic modalities to share the same space with few or no explicit regulations. Simulation technologies are becoming an essential tool for traffic planners and managers to analyze future urban areas before new concepts and technologies are applied on the road. The proposed simulation model can suitably replicate the motion behaviors of pedestrians and vehicles from new environments with incremental integration of new behaviors and calibrating model parameters. About the Author Fatema Tuj Johora received her Ph.D. in Informatics, in 2021, from Clausthal University of Technology, Germany. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Informatics at Clausthal University of Technology. Her research interests cover game theory, agent-based modeling, and machine learning in the area of intelligent transport system and autonomous driving.

Abstract

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has many special characteristics, such as low pressure and hypoxia, complex geological conditions, fragile ecological environment, and various bad weather conditions, which exerts a negative effect on highway construction and traffic safety. It is a huge challenge to build a safe and environment-friendly highway on the Tibetan Plateau due to lacking of mature experience around the world. Therefore, this book was supported by the National Science and Technology Support Program: highway construction technology in high altitude and cold regions to research the critical indicators and technologies. This book focuses on the driving behavior and typical vehicle characteristics in the high altitude area to put forward a series of geometrical indicators and traffic safety improvement measures, based on a great number of ground tests. Moreover, the relative achievements were applied to the demonstration project and validate the feasibility of indicators and countermeasures. It is of practical and leading significance for highway construction and improving the traffic level in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
