Les lettres iḫwāniyyāt (ou lettres fraternelles), échangées entre amis au départ et entre titulaires de charge ensuite, étaient des lettres d’abord privées puis officielles ayant un processus spécifique à suivre, processus qui fut détaillé par l’auteur du Kitāb muzīl al-ḥaṣr fī mukātabāt ahl al-‘aṣr, rédigé au début du XVe siècle.
