La Prévoyance Sociale, société d'assurances du parti socialiste, fait construire en 1912 un bâtiment Art Nouveau par l'architecte Richard Pringiers, ancien collaborateur de Victor Horta. En 1932, l'intérieur est entièrement transformé par Fernand et Maxime Brunfaut pour devenir l'un des espaces les plus intéressants de l'architecture moderniste du début des années 1930 en Belgique. Ils rehaussent le bâtiment d'un étage et le prolongent par deux immeubles de rapport. Classé monument historique, l'édifice a fait l'objet d'une restauration minutieuse qui s'est terminée en 2004. Dit boek bevat foto's van de elf nieuwbouwmoskeeën in Vlaanderen van de Belgisch-Turkse fotograaf Abdul-Vahit Duman. Vooraf schetst Meryem Kanmaz de evolutie van de moskeebouw in Vlaanderen van 'schuilmoskeeën' in omgebouwde woonhuizen, winkels of garages naar 'heimweemoskeeën' - replica's van het land van herkomst - en de groei naar moskeeën met een meer hedendaagse, Europese architectuur. De Duitse kunsthistoricus Christian Welzbacher bekijkt in een essay de moskeebouw in de rest van Europa en voert een pleidooi voor een eigen Euro-islamarchitectuur. In het hoofdstuk 'Moskeeperikelen' wordt de moeizame bouwgeschiedenis van drie van de nieuwbouwmoskeeën onderzocht: Een Turkse moskee in Beringen, een Marokkaanse moskee in Genk en een Pakistaanse moskee in Borgerhout.

The complex and shifting relation between regionalism and modernity.With its search for purity, honesty, modesty, and 'fitness of purpose', the late 19th and early 20th century concept of architectural regionalism is seminal to the modern movement. In later historiography, however, regionalism in Europe was neglected and even labeled 'backward'. The origins of this drastic change of perception can be traced to the 1930s, when regionalism as a positive form gradually turned into a 'closed' form of regionalism, a folding back on one's own region as a defence mechanism in an economically and politically turbulent decade. In this book internationally renowned researchers investigate the complex and shifting relation between regionalism and modernity in the architecture of Western Europe between the two World Wars, with a focus on Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and Great Britain. They demonstrate that regionalism cannot be separated from modernity, but is in fact a way of dealing with modernity and its contradictions.
