Abstract

"This groundbreaking book—far ahead of its time when first published in 1996 and still galvanizing today—interweaves history, memoir, and gender studies to show that transgender people, far from being a modern phenomenon, have always existed and have exerted their influence throughout history. Leslie Feinberg—hirself a lifelong transgender revolutionary—reveals the origin of the check-one-box-only gender system and shows how zie found empowerment in the lives of transgender warriors around the world, from the Two Spirits of the Americas to the many genders of India, from the trans shamans of East Asia to the gender-bending Queen Nzinga of Angola, from Joan of Arc to Marsha P. Johnson and beyond." --

Abstract

"Long before people identified as transgender or lesbian, there were female husbands and the women who loved them. Female husbands- people assigned female who transed gender, lived as men, and married women- were true queer pioneers. Moving deftly from the colonial era to just before World War I, Jen Manion uncovers the riveting and very personal stories of ordinary people who lived as men despite tremendous risk, danger, and threat of violence. Female Husbands weaves the story of their lives in relation to broader social, economic, and political developments in the United States and the United Kingdom while also exploring how attitudes toward female husbands shifted in relation to transformations in gender politics and women's rights, ultimately leading to the demise of the category of "female husband" in the early twentieth century. Female Husbands offers a dynamic, varied, and complex history of the LGBTQ past."-- "In 1746, Charles Hamilton of Glastonbury, England found what they were looking for - Mary, a curious young woman who was taken by their charms. With the approval of the girl's aunt, the pair were joined in marriage and set off on a honeymoon. Hamilton had little money and no family. But they were resourceful, determined, and charismatic. They offered Mary companionship and adventure. As someone who was assigned female at birth, Hamilton became known as a female husband. Nearly one hundred years later and across the Atlantic, the Journal of Commerce ran a story called, "Extraordinary Case of a Female Husband." Scottish immigrant George Wilson was found passed out on the streets of New York's Lower East Side. A policeman took them into the station. Wilson was just another poor laborer who drank too much after a long day of work. But as someone who was raised as a girl and now lived as a man, they were incredibly vulnerable to harassment, violence, and punishment at the hands of the authorities"--

Abstract

"Transgender History covers American transgender history from the mid-twentieth century to today. Transgender History takes a chronological approach to the subject of transgender history, with each chapter covering major movements, writings, and events. Chapter 1 covers the transsexual and transvestite communities in the years following World War II. Chapter 2 addresses trans radicalism and social change, which spanned from 1966 with the publication of The Transsexual Phenomenon, and lasted through the early 1970s. Chapter 3 focuses on the mid-'70s to 1990--the era of identity politics and the changes witnessed in trans circles through these years. Chapters 4 and 5 are broken into the gender issues witnessed through the '90s and '00s, respectively. Sidebars highlight quotes from major texts and speeches in transgender history, and others will feature brief biographies of key players. First-person narratives from transgender memoirs are excerpted and treatments of transgenderism in popular culture are also discussed."--Publisher's description.

Abstract

From the Publisher: Although the term "transgender" itself has achieved familiarity only within the past decade, this authoritative collection of articles demonstrates that the study of behaviors, bodies, and subjective identities which contest common Eurocentric notions of gender has a history stretching back at least to the early 20th century. Transgender studies is the latest area of academic inquiry to grow out of the exciting nexus of queer theory, feminist studies, and the history of sexuality. Because transpeople challenge our most fundamental assumptions about the relationship between bodies, desire, and identity, the field is both fascinating and contentious. The Transgender Studies Reader puts between two covers fifty influential texts with new introductions by the editors that, taken together, document the evolution of transgender studies in the English-speaking world. By bringing together the voices and experience of transgender individuals, doctors, psychologists, and academically-based theorists, this volume will be a foundational text for the transgender community, transgender studies, and related queer theory.
