Hadewijch is een ‘heilich glorieus wijf’. Zo typeerde een tijdgenoot de Brabantse mystica. Voor de dertiende eeuw was ze inderdaad een bijzonder intrigerende vrouw. Tot op vandaag geldt ze als een hoogtepunt in de Nederlandstalige literatuur en liefdespoëzie. Dit schitterend uitgegeven boek brengt Hadewijchs mooiste teksten bijeen, geïllustreerd met prachtige middeleeuwse miniaturen. Bovendien is een cd ingesloten met haar meest ontroerende liefdesteksten. Niet zozeer de mens, maar vooral Christus is het voorwerp van Hadewijchs niet te stillen liefde, die toen veelal ‘minne’ werd genoemd. Zij is de eerste die de geldende minnepoëzie ombuigt naar minnemystiek: extreme begeerte naar het één zijn met God drijft haar tot krachtige gedichten, liederen, brieven en visioenen Minnen: het is een spel op leven en dood. Want wie God liefheeft, voelt een constante spanning tussen ‘ghebreken’ en ‘ghebruken’: tussen ontbering en genieting, tussen de ellende van dit aardse leven en het hemelse. Juist deze afwisseling van wreed- en zoetheid wakkert Hadewijchs verlangen aan. Het is ook deze tegenstelling die op haar teksten licht en schaduw werpt. Hoe Hadewijch de minne tot God beleeft, raakt de kern van elke vorm van liefhebben. Daarom spreken haar geschriften ons aan tot op vandaag. Hadewijch. Die minne es al bevat pakkende liefdesliederen en -gedichten, beeldrijke visioenen en gedreven brieven aan hartsvriendinnen in de minne. Telkens staat de authentieke Middelnederlandse tekst naast de vlotte hertaling.
