Abstract

Art in Print is a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 to provide a venue for critical and scholarly writing about artist’s prints, both historical and contemporary, and to provide a central resource for print information, news, and events. It produces original content published six times yearly in a printed journal and on its website, Artinprint.org. Each issue includes feature articles and reviews of recent books, exhibitions and new editions, written by an international array of scholars, artists, and critics. In addition, each issue includes the most recent winner of the Prix de Print, our bimonthly printmaking competition, as well as timely listings of gallery, museum, print shop, and market news and events. Artinprint.org also offers a worldwide calendar of print events; resources on the history, making, and collecting of prints; and a regularly updated blog, the INKBlog. Art in Print is supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Dedalus Foundation, The Samuel H. Kress Foundation, The IFPDA Foundation, The Schwab Charitable Trust, The California Community Foundation, Arts and Business Council of Chicago, as well as individual donors.

Abstract

German printmaker Kathe Kollwitz (1867–1945) is known for her unapologetic social and political imagery; her representations of grief, suffering, and struggle; and her equivocal ideas about artistic and political labels. This volume explores Kollwitz’s obsessive printmaking experiments with the evolution of her images, and assesses the unusually rich progressions of preparatory drawings, proofs, and rejected images behind Kollwitz’s compositions of struggling workers, rebellious peasants, and grieving mothers. This selected catalogue of the Dr. Richard A. Simms collection at the Getty Research Institute provides a bird’s-eye view of Kollwitz’s sequences of images as well as the interrelationships among prints produced over multiple years. The meanings and sentiments emerging from Kollwitz’s images are not, as is often implied, unmediated expressions of her politics and emotions. Rather, Kollwitz transformed images with deliberate technical and formal experiments, seemingly endless adjustments, wholesale rejections, and strategic regroupings of figures and forms—all of which demonstrate that her obsessive dedication to making art was never a straightforward means to political or emotional ends. --Getty Publications

Abstract

This book shiifts the focus toward three collaborators of Rubens who - each in his own way - made an essential contribution to the printmaking industry in the Southern Netherlands. During the 17th century Antwerp was one of several printmaking centres in Europe. Between these centres there existed a lively exchange of specialized labour (mobility of engravers) and goods (prints). Thanks to intense contact, technical innovations (like mezzotint) were also disseminated. Print publishers in the various cities had different profiles and strategies, and the prints on offer could also differ from city to city.
