In dit boek staat de dagelijkse praktijk van de docent centraal. In 4 thema's wordt een aantal didactische grondbeginselen behandeld: het leren (bevorderen), een cursus ontwerpen, een cursus uitvoeren, het onderwijs managen en evalueren. Aan de hand van voorbeelden, schema's, modellen en de vaardigheden- en informatiebladen aan het eind van elk thema wordt een directe eerste hulp geboden bij praktische vragen. De auteurs leggen hierbij de nadruk op de verantwoordelijkheid van de student voor het eigen leerproces. Van de docent wordt verwacht dat hij in staat is studenten die kennis en vaardigheden bij te brengen waarnaar ze zelf nooit op zoek zouden gaan, om de eenvoudige reden dat ze zich het bestaan ervan niet realiseren.
