Zwarte zondag, de zaak Dutroux, de witte mars, de verklaringen van getuige Xl... hebben de vertrouwenscrisis tastbaar gemaakt. Via het nieuws en het perscommentaar werden de burgers van dit land zeer nauw en dikwijls ook heel emotioneel betrokken bij de gebeurtenissen die hun wantrouwen en onbehagen aanzwengelen. De tijd is rijp om die betrokkenheid aan te vullen met afstand. De universiteit is daar de uitgelezen plek voor. Een aantal onderzoekers van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel gaan vanuit een duidelijke maatschappelijke bewogenheid, maar binnen de strakke perken van een wetenschappelijke discipline, op zoek naar een verklaring van en een uitweg uit de vertrouwenscrisis. De fascinatie met evenementen wordt geruild voor een analyse van maatschappelijke verschuivingen. Populaire begrippen als 'de kloof' worden kritisch bekeken en te licht bevonden. De rechtvaardigheidsgevoelens van de bevolking worden geconfronteerd met de koele eisen van een democratische rechtstaat. Het perspectief wordt verbreed door de legitimiteitscrisis in historisch perspectief te plaatsen. De bronnen van het onbehagen worden ook gezocht in de machteloosheid van het hedendaagse individu ten overstaan van de technologieën en economische krachten die zijn lichaam en planeetbeheersen. De politieke vernieuwing is een mislukking. Erger nog, ze liet de politiek verworden tot theater. Beleid wordt gebabbel, en dat alles wordt hoogdravend 'communicatie' genoemd. In dit boek betoogt Mark Elchardus dat onze democratie steeds meer een 'dramademocratie' wordt. De burgers worden niet meer vertegenwoordigd. De media scheppen een beeld of voorstelling van de burger. De politici leggen zich daarbij neer. Zij acteren naar best vermogen in de reality soap die aldus ontstaat. Daardoor slinkt de macht van de burger, ten voordele van die van rechters, technocraten en individuen en groepen zonder representatieve waarde. De ontwikkeling van onze dramademocratie kan niet worden toegeschreven aan de slechte wil van politici. De samenleving en de mensen zelf zijn grondig veranderd. De politiek en de democratie hebben zich daar nog niet aan aangepast. Tegelijk zorgt een eenzijdige economische globalisering ervoor dat staten en collectiviteiten verschrompelen. Burgers worden consumenten. De globale economie ontwricht en verplaatst mensen als vee of koopwaar. Met het ongenoegen en de verzuring die daaruit voortvloeien, mag de dramapolitiek op haar theatrale en mediagenieke wijze omgaan. Een beter weg naar het populisme is haast niet te plaveien. Democracies can die with a coup d'état - or they can die slowly.
