Een burgeroorlog, een brutale repressie, apartheid: dat sterft nooit helemaal. De onbeantwoorde vragen en het verdriet die zij verwekken schuilen in het hoofd van wie het meemaakte. Ze zitten als fantoompijn in het lijf van wie nadien kwam, hun kinderen en hun kindskinderen. Luc Huyse beschrijft hoe mensen, van Afghanistan tot Zimbabwe, afrekenen met zeer dat niet voorbij wil gaan. Hij observeert in Ethiopië het proces tegen dictator Mengistu, luistert in ex-Joegoslavië naar overlevenden van een massamoord, ziet in Spanje hoe Franco opnieuw begraven wordt, praat in Zuid-Afrika met leden van de waarheidscommissie, zoekt uit waaraan de dwaze moeders en grootmoeders van de Plaza de Mayo hun succes te danken hebben. Het verleden temmen, daar gaat het steeds weer om. En, als het kan, rust brengen in het hart van wie vandaag en morgen leeft. Maar wat voorbij lijkt, wijkt niet. Dit boek leest ook als het relaas van een persoonlijke expeditie in onbekend gebied. In de loop van deze tocht krijgt de auteur compagnie van vele personages. Zij tonen hoe de confrontatie met de erfenis van een oorlog of een repressief regime kan ontsporen. En wekken de vragen waar het om gaat. Wanneer brengt het georganiseerde opslaan van de herinnering, het werk van waarheidscommissies, voor de slachtoffers meer heling dan pijn? Loopt vergeven en vergeten, amnestie dus, gegarandeerd verkeerd af? Waarom zit de inzet van tribunalen, de weg van de vergelding voor geleden leed, vol risico’s? Death came instantly to Imam Luqman, as four FBI agents fired semiautomatic rifles at him from a few feet away. Another sixty officers surrounded the building on that October morning, the culmination of a two-year undercover investigation that had infiltrated the imam's Detroit mosque. The FBI quickly claimed that Luqman Abdullah was "the leader of a domestic terrorist group." And yet, caught on tape, he had refused to help "do something" violent, as it might injure innocents, and no terrorism charges were ever lodged against him. Jameel Scott thought he was exercising his rights when he went to challenge an Israeli official's lecture at Manchester University. But the teenager's presence at the protest with fellow socialists made him the subject of police surveillance for the next two years. Counterterrorism agents visited his parents, his relatives, his school. They asked him for activists' names and told him not to attend demonstrations. They called his mother and told her to move the family to another neighbourhood.
