Bron : http://www.academiapress.be

With the world's population getting increasingly older, there has never been a more pressing need for the study of old age and ageing. An Introduction to Gerontology provides a wide-ranging introduction to this important topic. By assuming no prior expert knowledge and avoiding jargon, this book will guide students through all the main subjects in gerontology, covering both traditional areas, such as biological and social ageing, and more contemporary areas, such as technology, the arts and sexuality. An Introduction to Gerontology is written by a team of international authors with multidisciplinary backgrounds who draw evidence from a variety of different perspectives and traditions.

We are living in an age of crisis or an age in which everything is labeled a crisis. Financial, debt, and refugee crises have erupted. The word has also been applied to the Arab Spring and its aftermath, Brexit, the 2016 U.S. election, and many other international events. Yet the term has contradictory political and strategic meanings for those challenging power structures and those seeking to preserve them. For critics of the status quo, can the rhetoric of crisis be used to foment urgency around issues like climate change and financialization, or does framing a situation as a crisis play into the hands of the existing political order, which then seeks to tighten the leash by creating a state of emergency?Critical Theory at a Crossroads presents conversations with prominent theorists about the crises that have marked the past years, the protest movements that have risen up in response, and the use of the term in political discourse. Tariq Ali, Rosi Braidotti, Wendy Brown, Maurizio Lazzarato, Angela McRobbie, Jean-Luc Nancy, Antonio Negri, Jacques Rancière, Saskia Sassen, and Joseph Vogl offer their views on contemporary challenges and how we might address them, candidly discussing the alternatives that new social movements have offered, alongside an exchange between Zygmunt Bauman and Roberto Esposito on theories of community. Sparring over crucial developments in these past years of catastrophe and the calamity of everyday life under capitalism, they shed light on how crises and the discourse of crisis can both obscure and reveal fundamental aspects of modern societies.(https://cup.columbia.edu/book/critical-theory-at-a-crossroads/9780231186797)

Why are some networks more successful in achieving innovation than others? Why do some groups within organizations manage to operate without hierarchical boundaries, and at the same time achieve extraordinary, innovative results? How do they learn? And what kinds of network characteristics do they cherish? This book presents the process and findings of a four-year PhD study on these questions. With empirical data of more than seventeen networks a theoretical framework is presented in which characteristics of social capital are linked to knowledge productivity learning processes. This book invites you to connect to the world of social capital, participative research and innovative learning and at the same time offers a practical guide to get started within your own social network.

"Marking a major development in Foucault's thinking, this book derives from the lecture course which he gave at the College de France between January and April, 1978. Taking as his starting point the notion of "bio-power," introduced both in his 1976 course Society Must be Defended and in the first volume of his History of Sexuality, Foucault sets out to study the emergence of this new technology of power over population."--BOOK JACKET.
