En 2008, nous célébrons les cinquante ans de la tenue de la dernière exposition universelle et internationale organisée par la Belgique à Bruxelles du 17 avril au 19 octobre 1958. Indéniablement, l'omniprésence de son souvenir en témoigne, l'Expo 58 est un des lieux privilégiés de la mémoire collective, un événement phare de l'histoire récente du pays. Ce cinquantième anniversaire offre l'opportunité de replacer les nombreuses expériences personnelles de l'événement dans une perspective historique. L'objectif de ce livre, dont le propos est centré sur les multiples participants de l'Exposition - États, entreprises publiques et privées, Églises, visiteurs, etc. - est de nous replonger dans le contexte de cette spectaculaire manifestation pour ouvrir une fenêtre sur l'histoire de la Belgique des années cinquante. Proposant un bilan historique de cette fabuleuse aventure que fut l'Expo 58, l'ouvrage tente de décrypter comment, événement à la fois politique, économique, social et culturel, cette colossale entreprise est le témoin de son époque. Miroir d'une société en transition, l'Expo reflète tout autant la modernité économique, technologique et urbanistique annonciatrice de la prospérité des Golden Sixties que la permanence de schémas sociaux traditionnels en ce qui concerne les rapports entre les sexes, entre colonisateurs et colonisés, et entre les générations. Plus subtilement, ou bien avec fracas, elle laisse également deviner que l'esprit des années soixante est pourtant bien présent en cette fin de décennie. Il est en effet possible d'apercevoir en filigrane les prémices d'une nette évolution des mentalités qui viendra, quelques années plus tard, pulvériser les certitudes et les conventions encore bien vivantes dans cette Belgique de 1958 occupée à fêter sa gloire et la fin des privations de la guerre. Ce projet éditorial, initié par Anne Vandenbulcke et Karel Velle (Archives de la Ville de Bruxelles et Archives de l'État en Belgique), constituera le catalogue officiel de l'exposition Expo 58. Entre utopie et réalité qui aura lieu du 17 avril au 19 octobre 2008 à l'Atomium.
